OK guys here is the big secret..... we have designed and are building in our shop CNC cut billet aluminum AR15/.22 magazines. The good news for you colt/dpms guys is that I have a version of the mags with a left side feed lip ejector! We are in production now, parts go out to anodizing next week and we hope to have product ready to go out the door March 1st. I have been testing here and they run perfect in both guns. The finish will be a hard black anodize, price is $65.

I think you seriously need to consider doing some in FDE

Here is a picture of the first new billet mag off the CNC, before anodizing. For you colt/dpms guys this will work for you. A little more money but will get you by until the steel feed lip model comes out.

Thank you so much! BTW, when will steel feed lop model be available?

So this is a Black Dog 22LR conversion magazine machined out of aluminum.
If it fits tight and works, I want a few. What does the follower and spring look like?

same insides as every thing else we make

what is the weight of the CNC billet mag compared to the new steel feed lip version? also with the steel feed lip models coming out what was the reason for making a billet mag? don't get me wrong i think it looks like an awesome mag, i am just curious if there was a specific reason or need that these were made.

Ive had the idea for a while and wanted to get the billets out before anybody elst tried it. I like to "be first". I dont like to copy others products.
The other thing is we wanted 3 tiers of magazines at diferent price ranges.

So will these support the last shot hold open? (the new catch, not just the follower)

that makes sense and i do appreciate all the work you do for us .22LR guys. i know it's a buisbess and you do it to make money but you can tell that you enjoy what you do and obviously care about the wants and needs of your customers.

any chance you know the weight difference of the 3 types of mag, all plastic, steel feed lip option and the new billet mags? i am also interested in what another member asked, will this new billet mag be compatible with last round bolt hold open bolt catch being developed? thanks!

OK colt/dpms guys your mags are being cut right now. I got a question for you, I have several colt kits that I have been using for testing and compared to the other ciener style kits out there the colt kits seems to be a bit more ammo sensitive. Can any of you confirm this for me? I have very good results with high velocity ammo having it kick empties 10-15 feet, with the low velocity ammo the empties went 1-3 feet and sometimes stove piped. I think the bolt does not travel back far enough with the low power ammo. With that said and as long as you use good ammo I feel you now have a good 25 round mag. The ciener kit testing was as good as it gets.

Oooooh, shiny. Might consider a clear anodizing option - just too pretty to cover up.

In for M261 version.

I have not found mine to be finicky at all. I normally shoot HV in it, per the manual, but it worked with (the old SD) Dynapoints when I tried them. It even cycles the almost-squib loads I find in some boxes of Federal 550 bulk.

How many rounds do you have through your kit?

I have also found that mine will become unreliable if I let it go too many rounds without cleaning (I can usually get away with about 800 rounds between cleanings, I have experienced malfs in as little as 400). Also, I have found that my mags needs to be opened up and cleaned every know and then as well, or the next cartridge doesn't come up fast enough.

I'm going to have to order one of those ASAP. I think I have a good excuse to spend the money- the billet aluminum is probably as close to indestructible as I am going to be able to get–– that's must since OEM Colt mags are such hen's teeth

Bolt hold open after last shot? And will it work with the .22 bolt catches?
blackdogmachine  [Industry Partner]
3/15/2010 6:25:12 PM
no and no, reason is with the feed lips being solid aluminum we had to thin the tops and outside and add material to the inside, the follower does not come up up high enough to act as a bolt hold open. I could build a new follower to work but we would loose 2 rounds to do it. When you see the new follower for the steel feed lip mag you will see how complex that is and why we didnt do it with the billet mags.

I am mostly interested in finding out how tight these
lock up in the magwell. In my experience 99% of misfeeds
are because of the plastic magazines' loose fit.

I hear you and feel your pain but will also tell you there is about .020 in differences in AR lower mag wells depending on who made them and how old they are. It is hard to have a mag "perfect" in every gun. I try to stay in the middle of the tolorence.

I will give the aluminum mag a fair go with no expectations and let you
know how it performs.

Got the magazine and it is stout. If you run out of ammo, you
could use it as a hand to hand weapon. It fits like the others
as you promised. I loaded it with 26 rounds. The lips are
(of course) very rigid and present the rounds at the correct
angle at every load level. The follower slides smoothly.

Nice work. Range report this weekend.

I tested the Atchisson Style Billet Magazine with a Target Master Conversion
over the weekend. 100 rounds each of Federal Bulk and CCI Mini Mags. Not a
single failure of any kind. Every single one went bang. That's a new record.
This is the highest quality magazine I have ever seen for any caliber. And,
yes it could be used for hand to hand combat when you run out of ammo.
It would likely disable a bear if you were to hit em on the nose.

Kevin, BDM is simply the best of everything..

Excellent report! I didn't get to torture test the magazine over the weekend,
I got shanghaied by my wife into yard work. I did sneak off and manage to
shoot about 60 rounds Sunday with no issues.

We got 2 of the billet magazines in the other day for testing our assembled uppers.

I can find nothing wrong in the function of these magazines. We've put a ton of rounds thru them already and have had ZERO issues with them.

If you want magazines that will always work.....these are it. Well worth the money IMHO.

Nicely done Kevin....again.....as always.
