 Markings on a Colt AR15?

I just bought a used Colt AR15 ("Match Target Competition") and it has been castrated (post-ban = no FS threads or bayo lug). It is in great condition and the previous owner put roughly six 8rd mags worth of ammo throught the rifle. The bolt, bolt carrier, and other internal parts look NIB, basically.

Anyways... the reason for this thread is simple: I am just trying to find some meaning to some of the markings on the rifle. I know what the "C" means on the upper, bolt, etc, but what about the integrated "AF" on the upper, and "AB" on the detachable carry handle (which, btw, has some rough machining on the inside of the detachable carry handle that I would not usually associate with a Colt product), the "MP" on the front of the barrel, and the beginnings of a square box with a telephone like symbol inside on teh far upper right on the right side of teh receiver.

Could someone point me to a source of all these markings or be willing to share what they are or mean? Thanks!

I did, actually. I saw that some time ago but forgot all about it.

Sad thing is, all of those links are dead atm. The info is being moved to a new host evidently.

Thanks!

The "AF" forge markings on the upper is if I'm not mistaken means Alcoa Forge per the link given by team member El_Abogado.

When the picture link of the markings thread is fixed take a look at it.

I have a carry handle sight with the "AB" forge markings also and it came with my Colt Canada Diemaco marked upper M4 upper receiver.

The "MP" on the barrel stands for Magnetic Particle inspection which most Colt barrels have.

There is a lot of info at biggerhammer.net, good stuff.

Thanks for your help as well. It answers a lot of my questions.

btw... I've figured out that my Colt is a MT6700CH series. But dont worry, it will be given new life thanks to KKF real soon. A threaded muzzle and a A2 govt profile barrel will give it back most of its manhood. I am still debating about the bayo-lug.

AR-3: So if the upper of your M4 is marked Diemaco (DK), are you thinking that the detachable carry handle is Diemaco as well? With the " B " marking, I just hope and pray it doesnt mean I have a Bushmaster carry handle. I've looked high and low, but the actual details behind the "A B" markings are still elusive. *sigh*

Also, where would the buttstock be marked (if at all)?

If you want to add a FSB with a bayo lug it would cost more and it's a PITA for the gunsmiths to change it with a new FSB.

You might as well just get a similar model barrel with the bayonet lug and just switch barrels and sell your old barrel, it's up to you.

There are no definite proof that the "AB" markings or any markings on the carry handle came from a specific mfg., If I recall correctly only RRA have their mark on the windage knobs of their CH.

I bought my upper & CH sight from a Colt machine gun dealer that only sells Colts plus I have seen some Colts with the same forge markings on their CH.

We could get a better feeling if someone that deals with a lot of new Colts could verify this.

From what I hear around here and from my former Colt rifles that the buttstocks are unmarked.

The only buttstocks that I know that are marked "C S" are the few rare A1 length but with the A2 buttpads which are used on Sporter Lightweights (blue labels) around '90-'91.
