Our range ACR just broke when a customer dropped it on the ground.

We have an ACR available for customers to rent, and it has been very popular. The customer asked for my assistance because he was unable to operate the charging handle. When I inspected the rifle the charging handle was indeed stuck in the forward position, with a little extra effort I was able to free the charging handle. As soon as I brought the charging handle to the rear a broken piece of metal fell out of the mag well. I disassembled the rifle and found that the bolt catch/latch had been snapped in half and the portion of the magwell in front of the catch/latch had been torn out as well.

I asked the customer how this had happened and he admitted that he had dropped the rifle onto the floor when it was sitting on the bench.

From what I can best tell it looks like the bolt was locked to the rear when it was dropped and some how managed to of been forced closed when it fell, snapping the bolt catch and breaking the wall of the magwell.

Out of curiosity and possible correlation; do you have any idea on round count?

Cheers

We have had it for about 3 months, and I am going to guess somewhere around 3000

Yeah I will get pics up, my phone is charging.

We just got the letter in the mail about the recall as well, so we were planning on sending it back next week anyways.

How the hell could that rifle ever be considered for military use if it breaks that easily?

What did you do to the customer? Flog him, charge him for the rifle or give him a pass?

The positive side is the lower is not the registered part...and is replaceable...eventually...not like its a critical component.

I joking said "You break it, you buy it", it wasn't done maliciously, and I am sure that Bushmaster will repair it for free. I gave him an M4 to finish shooting his remaining rounds with.

The impact forces were enough to shear apart the metal bolt catch.... not sure how an aluminum lower would have really made a difference.

Everything is breakable, even "military use" rifles.

Would be interesting to know what & where the actual impacts were for failure analysis.

It appears in the picture that the polymer piece that broke allowed the metal peice to break were it did, but I guess the metal could have broken higher up?

So in theory it would and could still function, but the bolt would not hold open, nor could it be held open mechanically.

Would seem likely...

For the OP, do you have security cameras? It would be interesting to see what actually happened. I have a suspicion that what you were told isn't "the whole truth".

This, the story smacks of "too much Magilla" put on a part....

Do you see any impact damage on the rifle itself to support the claim it was dropped?

I have seen more than a few regular AR15's break. Where the stock meets the receiver is the most common, but I have seen them break by the front take down pin when the rifle is hinged open. Shit happens.

we had a m16 go down when our platoon sergeant accidentally dropped the bolt carrier from a foot off the ground and bent the gas key
