Extractor Spring - Rubber O Ring?

My new Bushy AR has a rubber O ring around (not inside) the extractor spring. This O ring is not shown in the operators manual (OM). The OM does show a rubber insert within the spring - but no O ring on the outside.

I've fired 500 rounds so far without any issues whatsoever.

1) What's the purpose of the O ring?
2) Why is it not listed in the parts or OM?

Thanks for your response

The oring helps the extractor to work better by holding better. It can be found on better bolts everywhere. There is only so much room for the spring so an oring was a way to stiffen it up.

Thanks for offering this information.

To this layperson, the O ring seems to be an item that could fail prematurely (and shoud be inspected often). For example, like old tires when they get cracked and dry out. I also wonder what the CLP is doing to degrade it.

Do you know if the extractor will still work ok without the O ring?

It would still work, but it wouldn't have the same strength and rigidity that it would with the O ring. As far as CLP breaking it down, it won't. I've lubed up my bolt and shot more than 7,000 rounds through one of my rifles and the extractor spring and O ring are just as strong as they were 5,000 rounds earlier. Soon, it may show signs of weakening which is why I have plenty of spare parts to replace it.

OK another good answer. But, I still wonder why Bushmaster does not show the O ring as a part.

Believe it or not, that O ring is not a standard part that's put in rifles (at least not those produced in 2007 and part of 08). This I know as none of mine have said O ring. The only thing I have in all of my rifles is a spring and a little blue nubbie (i.e. extractor spring and spring insert) as seen in the Bushmaster schematic. Maybe they've added this part on in current production. In my mind, it's an extra... not necessary, but definitely adds spring life to your extractor spring. One of my rifles has 5,000 rounds and I've never had to change the spring or the little blue nubbie within that spring on the extractor. The simple answer to your question is that the schematic is about a year behind the rifles... another words, it's about a year old. That's all I can say without the addition of Bushmaster themselves chiming in. Hope this helps.

I just got this response via e-mail directly from Bushmaster:

"Bushmaster has recently started using the Viton "O" ring # AZ15925 for $.50 on some of our firearms. It keeps the extractor spring from collapsing and insures positive extraction. Basically we use them on our pistols and machineguns. Your rifle must have been built with one of those bolts. "
