P-308 Chamber Length
Anybody used a chamber length gauge to see how long their chamber is? I just did and got 2.309". Seems pretty long to me, probably a bit longer than what can be fed into a mag even after you back it off ~ .020 - .040.
Anybody else have any numbers they care to share? I am trying to find a good load for my P308 but so far have yet to get anything better than ~ 1.5 inches at 100 yards.
Are you having problems with one flyer in a 5 shot group? Just asking. And if so, does the first one usually hit about an inch too low? If you don't mind me asking, What are you loading? Case? Projectile? Powder? Primers? Also, did you buy the chamber length gauge? Or did you make it?

No actually my cold bore shot is usually ~ 1 inch high! :)
I have been using Winchester brass, CCI Benchrest primers, 40-43.5 gr of Varget powder, and 168gr SMK bullets. So far nothing has been that accurate....
Doesn't anybody else on here handload for these rifles??????? Come on folks share some data!

My hand loads are very close to what you're loading. I had tighter groups with Hornady projectiles out of my rifle over SMK. What is your COAL? I think I worked up to 43.9 before I started seeing signs to back off.

I have been loading to 2.800 COAL but I think I should go longer with it since the chamber is so long? How long can you feed the 308 AR mags (I have C-Products, KAC, and PMAGS)
At 43.5 I started to see some ejector swipes so I stopped there... I had one decent group at 40.0gr of Varget but I didn't try loading that again since it was such a light load.
This rifle shoots 3/4 MOA on regular basis with FGMM and Hornady 168gr factory loads.... I know those are shorter than 2.800 COAL, I wonder maybe even backing the length back a bit?
Anybody?????
I load H4895 40 grains with 175 bullet. My COL is 2.80 and my fps is 2550 =/- 30fps.
I get sub MOA. My best groups are around .5 MOA.
I use a Redding small base die.
Perhaps you are trying to push the bullet too fast.
Gas guns have different requirements for loading then a bolt gun.
I might suggest loading your 168 grain bullets with less powder and if possible get a chrony and check your fps.
I load my 147 grain bullets with enough powder to push it to 2750 fps +/- 30 fps.
I hope this helps you.
We us a 7.62X51 NATO match reamer on our 308s.
I sampled a few P308s this week with a Hornady OAL length guage using 175SMK's and got an average COAL of 2.891 for loading "at the lands".
I personally do not even load to the lands on my precision bolt guns. I used to, then my gunsmith got me thinking by asking "what makes you think that throat erosion occurs perfectly concentrically?"
Additionally, Remington has been putting out moa or better shooters in the PSS, Sendero and LTR lines for decades and they have throats that make porn stars look short-throated.
Without going into that debate much further (plenty of material for pondering at benchrest.com, etc), I can offer this:
-as a manufacturer that sells production weapons we cannot have short throated guns. Remember some of our buyers are sub moa shooters that respect the round and buy ours because we have things like Rock Creek 1:10 5R blanks and will do their best to eek the most accuracy they can. Others may want to blast a pallet of Indian surplus all day until they can light cigarettes off the barrel. The 7.62X51 Match chamber accomodates our marketshare's needs the best.
Remember that gas guns are entirely different animals from bolt guns, and while many shooters can shoot them well, many others need much more practice (I'm in the latter group).
If you have a P308 that will not shoot FGMM, Black Hills Match ammo or other top of the line production match ammo to an acceptable accuracy level, when fired by shooters that are capable of sub-moa shooting with a AR platform feel free to contact us.
I finally got some pretty positive results today with a new load I was trying. 3/4 MOA!
Winchester Brass
CCI BR2 primers
41gr RL-15 powder
168gr Hornady A-max
2.800 COAL (2.176 at the ogive)
Distance 100 yards, wind ~ 5mph left to right - See the results below

Very nice!!
Its pretty tough to get much better than that! Looks like you've got a load!
Nice group. What are you using to seat your bullets? I use a Redding die and I couldn't get my Hornady Amax 168gr to sit far enough in to get a COAL of 2.800. The bullets still fit into the mag. But it would almost be rubbing the tip. Thanks in advance.
I am using a Redding Competition seating die and a RCBS small base sizer. The Redding Competition seater is very consistent the seating depths don't wander more than 1 or 2 thousandths of an inch.
