I recently picked up a S&W M&P 15 flat top, or optics ready, whichever you'd like to call it and would like to install a rail on it. I have an eotech that will be installed on the rifle as well. Which rail would be best for this rifle? I am far from being a gunsmith and I understand that some models require some "minor gunsmithing" to install? Is there such a model that I could install on my own?
Also, will the rail be even with the flat top of the receiver so that the eotech can be mounted further forward and partially be on the rail and receiver if need be?
Easy drop in installation and the rail is level with the top rail. I have had this one on one of my rifles in the past. If you have an Eotech with the stepped bottom, they fit with your standard hand guards and there is enough room for a magnifier and a flip up iron sight on the upper receiver rail. I use my forward rails for lights or lasers.
The MCTAR-17 is always a great choice. it is easy to install with no gun smithing a solid lock up and a good place for lights , vpg, or other things. We do not recommend installing any optic fully on a hand guard . You can bridge it but don't go all the way forward. if you want a easy in stall free float unit you could choose the MCTAR-20 . You will have to cut off the delta ring for this unit but that's not to hard . All of our hand guards will be level with your upper .I hope this helps and if you have any more questions please ask.
The free float models are mounted to the area of the barrel nut . this gives the rifle better accuracy due to no contact from anything . the drop in models mount just like the standard plastic units no gun smithing easy install . for most casual shooter the drop in work great.
