Dyneema or Kevlar?? whats the difference other than the price?
I see SKD offers soft armor in Dyneema and kevlar.......what the difference? Dyneema is listed at a higher price....why?

Dyneema = ~10% lighter laminate, at a higher price.
Kevlar = thicker woven fabric with better performance against contact shots
Dyneema uses a high density extremely long molecule (high molecular weight) polyethylene that is lighter (lighter than water even), but isn't as heat resistant.
Kevlar and Twaron are polyaramid fibers, which do have better heat resistance in general, still provide excellent protection, but it is a bit more dense.
With how the Kevlar units are woven, they are much preferred for contact shots, even some armor suites consist of a p-aramid layer over a UHMWPE layer that are laminated together.

In short; Kevlar protects more, but is bulkier; Dyneema is lighter, but sacrifices some protection for it
Another aspect of Kevlar, compared to some of the competing products is its heat resistance. Years ago, I remember my dad pissed off a rep from one of the competing product's companies. We were up at the state fair and this rep was giving his spill to a few police officers about why a vest using their product would be so much better than their current Kevlar vests. At some point the rep did admit that their product wasn't as heat resistant as the Kevlar, but told the officers that it really wasn't an issue. About that time my dad decided to inject himself into the conversation. My dad asked the officers what happens when a bullet strikes a vest. They looked a little blank. He pointed out that the strikes create friction. He then asked them what friction produced. One officer said heat and then a couple of the officers kind of chuckled. The officers walked away from the guys both and that rep was staring at did with a look that could have burnt through lead. Dad laughed all the way back to his companies booth. He just retired last year after about 39 years with DuPont and as far back as I can remember, he worked in Kevlar.
I might be a little biased though when it comes to Kevlar vs. the others, but thats because I know which product put food in my belly and clothes on my back growing up.

I see that the PIG-specific dyneema backers from Velocity are still on the website, but it appears that the kevlar PIG-specific backers are gone. Did they get the axe? If so, which size of the other Velocity kevlar backers best fit the PIG?
I'm pretty sure they are 12x14.. OK, I just measured - they are 11.5x13
I can't seem to pull up the specs and nobody is around right now to check. I'll try and measure my dyneema inserts and update this post.
