Best shot placement?
I'll be using a stag M8 with 1/7 twist 16 in barrel. I've managed through the grace of god to get some handloaded 70 gr. TSXs. My optic is a 1-4x trijicon with green triangle. I'm getting around 2 moa at 100 yds with this setup. I know an ear shot would be great but if I can't get that shot for some reason what is the best place to DRT a 250 - 300 lbs boar? Going on the hunt on fri. with wounded warrior in Columbia, La. Any help mighty appreciated!
anywhere along the neck in front of the shoulder. The spine is dead center in the neck from base of skull to front of shoulder. I have never had one go anywhere with a neck shot. if you look really close on the picture on my post "my biggest pig" you can see the entry hole. He did not even twitch!
My shot choices are :
(1) front of shoulder
(2) behind the ear
(3) quartering heart shot
(4) Texas heart shot (top of the base of the tail)
This is my second most used shot. It will drop a hog when all you have is the running away shot.
What ranges do you usually end up killing them at I'm zeroed for 100 is a 100 yrd zero ok in your book?
Nice hog AR, I hope these 70 TSXs gimme just a little bit of what that 6.8 does for you!
Zero at 50 yards and you'll be GTG out to 225 yard, about 1.5 inch high at 100 yards.
90% of the hogs I shoot are between 50 to75 yards.
Neck shots.
From pics sometimes it seems hard to tell where the damn spine starts fro
Shoulder to bottom of skull. So neck is best. Thanks y'all I'll post pics when I get my hog on fri hope it's a "trophy" whats a good price for full head shoulder mount or European mount of skull? This is my 1st hunt since being wounded in 06 so I'm probably just over excited. One guy quoted me 450.00 for full mount and 175.00 for euro ....
The cranial vault sits high in the rear of the skull (in relation to the massive snout and jaws) and the bones that make up the bottom of the brain case are thinner. If you penetrate the brain case, the cavitation wave will explode the bottom and liquify the brain. The brain stem that controls vital function will also be damaged and precipitate an instant death. It's like a sonic boom inside the skull. Check my recent post and you can see the results. That boar's brain was liquid and the base of the skull was blossomed out after a shot in front of the ear. Wait for the shot and be careful.
If the hog is moving, and a head shot/ neck shot is not a 100% connect- take the lungs. Right in back of the elbow gets the lungs and heart. The heart is carried pretty low in a hog. With a 5.56, you might be tracking it for a bit with this shot, but it IS a kill shot, and it's better to hit the boiler room and be sure rather than take a swing at the head on a moving target and wing the animal, or miss completely.

sounds like your good ta go bye shooting threw the pipe standerd's... any thing closer than 100yrds, tighter group...

lot will depend upon the terrain of area, sitting on stand or easing threw think stuff... some times just getting out thar tis a good thing... Best of Luck an have a good time...
high-mid neck
how"d ya'll do?

yeah how did you do? I'm leaving Sunday for pig, and have my .270 packed, and don't know whether to load out the AR with some heavier grain shells, or just bring the 12ga and some slugs as the tracking gun.
