Weekend before last, I was coyote hunting. I had my wounded rabit decoy out and was set up about 150 yards away. I called for about a half hour or so, when I spotted some movement in the woods on the other side of a fence line. I picked up my binoculars and the movement I saw was another hunter. He creeped up to the fence and pointed his rifle at my decoy for a good 2 minutes. I thought for sure he was going to shoot my decoy

He must have realized it wasn't a real rabbit because he finally put his rifle down and scanned the area for quite a while. I would have been pissed if he shot over that fence and killed my decoy.

It also would have been against the game laws in Texas for him to intentionally shoot across a fence-line onto another person's property.
But back to the topic at hand: I am sure that a call (or calling) would be effective on occasion.... with just the right hog, at the just the right time, under just the right conditions, but its not a method I plan to use frequently (if ever).
I've tried it before and gotten bad results...(more than not). One exception being.... mimicking a piglet squealing, but that was South Texas and I was actually calling Javelina, just happened to get Javelina AND a big 'Ol sow hog (feral).
Sometimes we'll use hog grunts to help us find the hogs when we're stalking during the day. Let out a grunt or two and if there are other hogs near then they'll usually stir around a little and make some noise so you can find them. Otherwise you might just walk right past them and never know that they were there.
Other than that, we don't use any calls. We tried using them a long, long time ago but I've pretty much decided that they odds of them working aren't worth the effort of using them.

I had let out a few coyote howls with my mouth call, so I assume he was a neighbor that came to his fence line looking for the yote. I was on my friends elderly mom's land which nobody really hunts. I'm sure he thought he'd get away with shooting onto her land. Once he realized it was a decoy, I'm sure he knew someone was watching. I don't think he ever saw me though.
Sorry to hijack the thread. It wasn't my intention.
No problem

I pretty much got the answer I thought I was going to get. Not worth the $2 for the extra hog call. We normally just hunt them off of the deer feeders but every now and again we'll have a no show and thought naybe this could be an option. Thanks for the input guys!
