I took advantage of the strong winds today an walked/crawled through an area of the ranch we call "cedar hill" for obvious reasons. We have a road that circles the hill but in between and on the side it is super thick with game trails crossing through several areas. I know it's a good spot and see deer and hogs on the roads regularly and lots of game trails/sign. I went with the intention of spotting a bedded deer or hogs and getting one with my bow. This is what I walked up on.

my camera beeping woke one up and alerted the others, the sow came out from under another cedar about 30yds away. I shot the sow with my pistol and they all ran off. Pretty uneventful.

Rule #1 - Disable all camera noises before you take them out hunting.

I learned that a long time ago in a situation a lot like yours. We even leave video cameras on all of the time when we're using them because we've had hogs hear the camera start up when we turned it on.

At least you know where to go find them and next time you can get some better action. BTW....those are some pretty cool pics to capture.

I had all the sound turned off at one time, I'm not sure when it came back on. I like to take pics of the animals I see so I always have it with me.

I walked up on another group today and watched them for a few minutes until they got up and walked away.

clharr,

I'm in the hill country too and I am always amazed that even during the heat of the day I find pigs nestled under cedar trees instead of napping near the wallows or creek bottoms. Always been strange to me. The other day I was walking a prop near mine with the land owner and we spooked 6 very large boars that were sleeping under a lone cedar near the top of a hill. We both agreed that it was the most unlikely spot on the entire ranch that we would expect to see hogs. They never fail to amaze me.

Proper spelling and grammar are not required for posting on ARFCOM, however effective communication is key if you wish to discuss any topic anywhere.

Anytime you are communicating in print, proper spelling and grammar are much more important than when speaking since inflection is almost impossible for most of us to convey in print.

Hence the use of smileys.

Sorry, your post are hard to read or take very seriously, Firefox has a built in spell check function. If I did not use it typos would make all my post nonsensical.

Not being a hog hunter at all, if they are considered pests, is it considered unsportsmanlike to shoot them where they lie? I'm just thinking that if I had a large, nonnative, destructive species running amok around me ruining native game habitats I would exterminate them with the same viciousness as I would termites in my house. Maybe I'm taking the fun out of it though...

Also, is it considered unsportsmanlike to shoot and bury/burn them? From the videos I've seen, it looks like the hunters shoot many more than several freezers worth at a go. I guess you could always donate to soup kitchens, will they take a whole carcass or are you expected to butcher them as well?

Thanks in advance.

Hogs you shoot as many as you can, take what you want, dispose of the rest according to land owners wishes, this may mean just leaving them lay.

I never claim to be sportsmanlike. I killed 3, maybe 4 last night with Gen 3 night vision and suppressed semi auto. Not very sporting on my part, but great fun. Hogs are destructive to my land and crops and eat food intendend for cows and deer (my income).

I leave most lay (after a few cuts to open them up) for the buzzards and other critters. Cum ba ya , circle of life.

My buddy and I came across a sleeping pack like that in a river bed last year. We were 10 feet above and 10 feet out from them. I had my AK and my buddy had his AR. Good times! Piglets are stupid when you drop the sows first

The cedar oil repels ticks, fleas and lice.

Same reason they like to rub the creosote on telephone poles.
