My sister's boyfriend grew up in the iron range area in MN, great black bear country. They do bear hunting and they offered to bait for me this year. Of course I had to take them up on it and luckily I won the lottery, hopefully my brother gets drawn next year. Anyways I was up there last week when we started baiting and here are some of the pics we got.

So now I have to decide if I shoot him with a 308 Win using a 180 gr Nosler Partition or a 12 gauge slug from a rifled barrel. I will be shooting from a stand close to the bait sight so 50 yards would be the longest shot I could imagine having to take. I have 600 grain Brenneke Black Magic Magnums and 385 grain Rem Core Lokt Ultras which have 1000 ft/lbs more energy at 50 yards than the Brennekes. I wish I had realized this when I bought the Brennekes, they looked good because they are 600 grains and have a black bear on the box but oh well, I'll use them for something.

don't worry so much about the round. both of the rounds you have listed will stop the bear in its tracks if you hit the vitals.
when choosing I would look more at the gun and hunting conditions then the round(not to say that the round isn't important).
I have a mossy M590A1, but my mini-SASS in 6.8SPC is a bit handier for me while sitting in my stand all ghillied up.
