I'm planning to do some black bear hunting this spring with some friends. Here in Alberta they can be hunted as pests without license/tags/etc. for Alberta residents as long as you have the permission of the landowner. My parents have 320 acres of forest that we've seen black bears and signs of black bears at. My dad says he just wants the claws and skull. Is bear meat good? These bears eat tons of blueberries and saskatoons as the property is full of them plus tons of wild strawberries.
Any tips for the first time black bear hunter?
I was thinking of going out to hunt them with me plus 2-3 friends. Should make for some fun weekends.
I have a decent arsenal of firearms to select from but am not sure what
would be ideal. I think I would take out my 12.5" barreled 12 gauge 870, my VZ58 with Leupold scout scope, my M14, and maybe an SKS or another 12 gauge. I can't take any handguns out other than my antique .32 Rimfire revolver.
12 gauge, 7.62x39, and .308 are suitable for blackbear right?
If baiting is legal in your area, it is the most effective way to hunt bears. The other option is the use of bear dogs.

Not able to use dogs, but baiting is good during bear season. Outside the bear season, can't use bait.
Bear meat is great, particularly spring bear, its much more lean. If you really want to kill some bears, bait is the way to go.
Definitely use the bait. Start going to your local restaurants and asking them to save their grease for you.
Get some molasses, dog food, old fish guts, old bread or pastries (again from local restaurants). Combine
the non-liquid in potato or grapefruit bags. Tie them in a tree and then pour the grease and molasses around the
bottom on the ground, trunk, or logs. That'll definitely get them coming in.
Take your .308 and have fun.
