lead round nose, JHP or Hornady's stuff for AK black bear?
I'm going to SE Alaska for vacation in about a week, and my SIL told me she wants me to have a few beers at her house and shoot a problem bear that's been hanging around their house lately. The bear is underweight, has a gimpy leg, is mangy and has been foraging for food unlike the other bears in the area: middle of the day, going up to houses, etc.... basically acting desperate and not wary of people. The bear scared them last week, so she had to hurry her two daughters and niece inside when the bear came around.
Anyway, I shipped my 1895G in .45/70 up yesterday (too much of a hassle to check it with baggage while dealing w/ wife and three kids) along with some ammo. I have an XS peep sight setup on the way and I'll install when I get to AK, then sight it in at the range.
I have three ammo choices: Hornady LeverRevolution 300gr ballistic JHP, handloaded 350gr JHP (well, kind of a lead nosed semi-jacketed hollow point) and a 405 lead round nose. Will all do the job, or is one an obviously better choice?
I'd lean towards the 405 but thats just me,brown or black?
Black bear, gimpy limb, scraggly, underweight......not afraid of people and hungry
Have put a 6in to 8in hole in a blacky with the old 405 hollow points.
Has she called the state?
State can get grumpy about people shooting problem bears.
They are cracking down on people shooting bears in the southeast.
Anything in the 45/70 is fine on bears.
Yup, already called Fish & Wildlife, who basically told her to be careful, and asked about the bear's condition. It's more of a safety issue because this is happening among a bunch of houses and there are children around. There are often bears around, but they normally scrounge for food at night and avoid people. The problem bear, however, is in poor shape and is foraging during the day and approaching people. It's just too close for comfort.
Wonder why the state hasn't shot the bear already with kids around.
Have her and the neighbors push hard for something to be done on the bear before you get up threre.
If the state doesn't do anything good luck.
Again any 45/70 load will do.
Ya, I'm a bit surprised that ADFG hasn't done anyhing. My BIL works for the local gov't and also worked for a time with Fish/Game, and my father-in-law worked for them a long time ago and is still active with the fisheries side of things. Despite the connections, they got no real help.
I really don't expect to shoot the bear, but I'll be ready if it shows up.
