Probably the quickest hunt I've ever been on. Was in my stand for about 10 minutes when I saw this guy lumbering down the trail towards me. I never weighed him, but another guy in the group had his weighed at 405 on certified scales and mine was bigger than his.

Congratulations! Nice bear, may I ask what county you were hunting in? Season for me opens up on the 1st Dec.

It was Washington county. I was hunting a few miles south of Lake Phelps with Conman's Guide Service.

I'm not one to bump my own thread simply because of a lack of replies, but really, only one person says something?

Very nice bear! Did you do this on your own or did you go through a guide?

I used Conman's Guide Service. They're a pretty good outfit, and the area has the potential for huge bears.

You know, I never measured him before I took him to the taxidermist. He's damn big though, oughta be real close to B&C minimum.

What weapon did you use for that bear? How did it react when hit?

I used a 7mm mag. His reaction was very pissed off. The guide had to finish him off with his .45-70.

Oh now come on. You gotta tell more details than that. Broadside... Quartering away or towards.... shot placement.... bullet used.... distance.... Did you not go in with the guide after the bear? Why did he finish it off?

He was quartering away. Bullet was a hand loaded 160 grain Partition. I thought he was more broadside when I shot so the hit was a little farther forward than I would've liked. He wasn't very far, maybe 60-70 yards, but being as its a black bear, and it was still pretty dark in the trees, I couldn't tell what was what as well as I thought I could. That's my excuse anyway.

The guide wouldn't let me go after it because of "liability" or some such nonsense. Kinda pissed me off, but I figured I'd let him do his job. It wasn't a perfect shot, but it wasn't horrible, either. He probably would've bled out but I thought the shot was better, so he went right in. When the bear took off from the guide, he made it to that canal in the first pic and the guide finished him off before he could get out.

That must have been a muscled up bear, because it sure dosen't look over 400lbs.

I'm not saying it isin't, just saying that since muscle weighs more than fat, he must have been muscled up pretty good

I'm just going off what the outfitter told me. Everyone agreed that mine was larger than the bear that weighed 405. I didn't see it at the scales, and personally didn't care too much about what mine weighed since its big enough for me.

And mine looks like a giant drowned rat in that pic.

Nice ! Just a warning! Bears are not nearly as dangerous as wives when they see what the rug cost!
