Choke in your Upland Gun?
Just read an article in the Sept/Oct edition of Shooting Sportsman. One of the authors was advocating at the most I/C in an upland gun. His theory is that the advancements in wad technology over the years have results in patterns that are too tight for most upland game, which is shot at around 25 yards.....
Look, I know he writes stories to make money............
What choke do you use for your upland gun?
Birds over dogs, not wild pheasants flushing 40 yards away....
Upland birds for me means Ruffled Grouse and most of the time I am practically stepping on them before they flush and they are behind cover in 25-yards or less. I only use I/C.
Pheasants I normally use a modified. Doves I use either modified or full depending on where I am sitting.
Just depends on the distance of your shots however. If the birds are further away you need a tighter choke regardless what any expert says or what you may have used in the past or may use in the future. I normally carry a set of choke tubes and wrench with me when I am hunting just in case the birds are acting funny for some reason!

This.
My favorite grouse gun is a old ithaca 37 featherlight 20....no screw in chokes. If I use it for pheasants I use bigger shot.
I/C or even a Skeet.
I/C and MOD in my SxS.
Probably tighter than needed, but I only take head shots anyway so I am not worried about meat loss.

Funny.
I use the same in my SXS.
Modified and full in the Browning Citori.
Pheasant country ;or it used to be anyway

For pheasants, I use mod and full chokes in my Red Label: mod first, for close shots, then full for a tighter pattern farther out in the even of a miss - at least, that's the theory.
My old American Arms O/U had fixed IC and mod chokes, and it seemed adequate.
When I used an 870, I used a mod choke.
One of my Model 12s is choked mod and the older one was a full but was opened up at some point. Both are still pretty tight though, sometimes a little too tight.
same thing I use on most sporting clays courses. Ic over Skeet
Stock Benelli I/C
i use a 12.5" bbl 12ga open with no screw in chokes
