going duck hunting this morning :update:
Probably not gonna see alot this early in the season, its to warm down here. But the place we are going is only accessible by boat. So its a good test run. Plus we've never been there, so we can build some blinds and check it out. I hope to shoot a couple atleast.
Only saw one flock of about 10 mallards. didn't even slow down for our decoys. Just alittle out of range. To hot still.
I'm going to try in the morning. Went to bass pro and bought some waders, the waders I used 8 years ago when I was 14 don't exactly fit anymore, plus some rats chewed holes in the crotch!
going in the morning just for some practice then taking my brother and maybe my brother in law thanksgiving morning. been seeing alot of ducks lately but I don't think the weather will coopperate. supposed to be mild temperatures and sunny. last weekend would have been perfect but I was deer hunting, deer hunting in the fog and mist made me get excited for duck hunting.

Seen some, called some in actually but its kinda a pain when I'm by myself doing all the work. got one this morning and one this evening. Just wanted to get Mack out before the actual hunt in the morning with my brother. Its been a few years since Mack had been hunting but he remembered everything I taught him. He's really fat now but with my shooting he didn't work too hard.
MOAR pics tomorrow.

I got these yesterday on Fort Gibson Resevoir. To hooded magansers hens.I learned the diving ducks don't taste very good! Otherwise havn't seen much in the way of real ducks. I don't give up hope though. What part of okie you in? Good lookin dog.
Fish eating ducks take a LOT of seasoning to make them edible. Otherwise they are good for pet food. Any day that you go home with birds is a good day though, my boy got a merganser last weekend and he ate it.

I cooked it with bacon. My dog loved it!
Ya diving ducks aren't the best tasting.
Me and my brother went this morning. We were covered up with ducks, even though it was a clear day, I was pretty surprised. we ended up with 10, only one mallard drake. the rest were wigeons or gadwalls, I can't tell the difference. It was cold, calm, and clear. Not the best duck hunting weather but I think we did pretty well, only two shy of our limit.
I'm from central Ok, south of OKC, north of chickasha. Plan on going this evening and in the morning and probably everyday until sunday, then I go back to stillwater. Two more weeks then school is out for Christmas break. I want to duck hunt a bunch over Christmas break, I've got the itch.

Mack is getting old. I got him as a pup when I was 14, I'm 22 now. So he's 8 or 9. he's supposed to be champion bred and named after his daddy. He's showing signs of age but he's just now a good hunting dog, maybe by the end of duck season he won't be so fat!
Sweet man, looks like you cleaned up on birds. I haven't seen much of anything in the last week or so besides those two meganzers the other day. My gunsmith buddy who's big into duck hunting around here says it won't get good around here until around jan. when it gets really cold. I'm just getting into this duck hunting thing and its bad ass, but complicated and exspensive. I think thats what makes it interesting though. I'm used to dove hunting down in texas and all you need is a shotgun, a 5 gallon bucket and a 6 pack. Now you gota have waders, shotgun, decoys, boat , dog etc! You ever read the migration chart on Ducksunlimited?
The start up cost is the most expensive part. I bought all my stuff when I was young, it lasts forever. I've got everything except a boat. We jusT hunt farm ponds so don't really need a boat. There are ducks around, more than i've seen in past years this time but that's mostly due because the ponds finally have water in them. There'll be more ducks for sure when it gets colder. I'm just out practicing my calling, decoy setting up, and my dog. Never seen any migration chart or anything before.
I read a book when I got my dog and I think it really helped in training. "Retriever training: a back to basics approach". Awesome for a first time trainer. I was 14 and my dog still remembers the basics 8 years later.
Yeah, I've been scoping out some good ponds around here. I found a couple of decent ones. I'm gonna get a dog soon and start working with him for next season. I have a couple of small boats that I can hunt with. I've been thinking about turning my 14ft flat bottom boat intol a floating blind kinda deal. Is that a ruger red label your using?
Baikal 20ga. I've had it for 10 years. I dove hunt, duck hunt and pheasant hunt with it. I've thought about moving up to a 12ga but I'm still deadly with this, no reason to change.
Yeah 12ga or 20ga its all about skill anyway. Until you get into high flying geese ! Sucks this week, The only guy I know who likes duck hunting went up to kansas for the week. He's got the decoys too. Looks nice out there today.

You may want to get the full name of the sire, 2XNAFC 2XCNAFC FC EBONSTAR LEAN MAC was a VERY prestigous field trial dog. To this date there has been no dog to top his accomplishments. My retriever is the grandson of Lean Mac.
Just saw this. I'm in SW OK (Ft. Sill area) if any of y'all OK boys ever wanna go duck hunting, lemme know. Always looking for solid folks to hunt with

I thought that name sounded familar....just looked at my pups pedigree. Lean Mac is my pups great-grandpa on his mom's side.
Listed as: NAFC FC AFC EBONSTAR LEAN MAC

Same dog?
Dude got around
Yep its the same dog. They have lots of frozen swimmers from what I understand. The dogs been dead for several years and he still commands $1000+ stud fee. Here's Lean Macs grandson, my very own SHR Mister Moose McLovin, or Moose for short.

Small world. Looks like your dog has some nice ribbons to show. Cool!
"Downtown Ripley Brown" says hello to his long lost cousin. He turned 8 months on the 11th.
Ripley should get to go on his first, hopefully very controlled, duck hunt here in the next couple of weeks. HIs marking and basic retrieving has been good, his handling is off to a good start. We'll go with one or two shooters and I'll just take my doggie and no gun. Should be fun
