PSA: Don't finish off deer with a knife...
...shoot them again if they are still alive.
http://www.journalgazette.net/article/20111116/LOCAL07/311169959/1002/LOCAL
A fellow Indiana hunter was killed when a buck he tried to finish off with a knife was still alive. Complete story is at link above.
They may seem docile and skiddish...but they will fuck your life up in a straight hurry if they feel they need to fight and not flight.
The pointy things on their head are not just ornamental.
Paralyzed a deer last season, used a knife to finish it. Trying to kill a buck with a blade? Hmmm
Yeah, I was taught as a kid to give em a chance to die on their own, then cut the throat. If that isn't gonna happen within a few minutes put another round in them, preferably in the neck..... Last summer we came across a doe sitting up in the middle of the highway. My wife asked me to help the poor thing. Glock 19 to the rescue!
My friend had to dispatch a 6 pt. buck with a follow up neck shot from his 308.
We were within 10 feet of the deer when he shot it in the neck. Evidently, he didnt
hit the spine quite right and after watching that deer thrash and spin around like a
helicopter without a tail rotor for a full minute before dying, I vowed NEVER to get
that close again. If we were any closer I firmly believe we would have been hurt
REALLY badly. It really was damn scary. That thing uprooted small trees and shrubs
and cleared every leaf off the ground down to dirt in those crazy 60 seconds. It was spinning
so fast my poor friend couldnt ever get another round aimed at a good spot. Thankfully,
it died abruptly after scaring the beejeebers out of us. I'm amazed it didnt screw itself
into the gound like a drywall screw.....
I will continue to use my knife
The first day I ever hunted (10 years old) my dad winged a crotchhorn with buckshot

. It was down and couldn't get up. I put 2 mighty .410 slugs in its neck from about 6 feet but I didn't hit the spine, I guess. Dad whipped out the blade and proceeded to give it the ole' colombian necktie.

He cut its throat, cut the tongue loose from the mouth and pulled it out the hole in the throat and allowed it to dangle? Why would he do that?

Your choice of course.

I would not recommend any of the crop of newb hunters doing it, I was also kicked once, stoutly, in the head by a doe. I was 14 and I had shot her with #4 buck shot, caught her with one pellet behind the ear. She was pretty much ok, just had no balance and kept falling down. Nearly knocked me out when she caught me in the temple, that could have killed me right there.
i've been in a knife fight with a wounded buck before ... I got bruised pretty bad on my legs (from the antlers) and consider myself lucky to be here today ..
eta: that was during archery season and I left the bow at the truck (shot at last legal mins of shooting hours, waited 30 mins and ditched the gear at the truck and proceeded to look for the deer) .. I should have been carrying my CCW piece but wasn't ... I can GUARANTEE that if the problem presents itself again I will shoot em with a pistol to dispatch conservation laws be damned!

Why not simply shoot the animal again? Ammo is not that expensive

In that case I was out of ammo. Usually I shoot deer in the last few minutes of legal shooting light. If I have to finish them off it is after shooting light. They cant say I shot the deer illegally if don't fire another shot, A lot times I shoot them in the head with a pistol. I have always had an aversion to shooting a deer more than once if I did not have to. I dunno just how we always did it.
I had to execute a doe this year. Shot her in the back of the head with one hand with the .308. Unfortunately, I let the barrel get too close to her head and I could smell burned hair.

I had the barrel go inside the ear canal once, as deep as possible. There was not much left of the head
This is why I carry a sidearm when I hunt.

I wish I could. Not allowed here.
Bad shots happen sometimes even to the best and most practiced hunters. It is outrageous that we are not allowed (at least in CT) to carry a pistol in case something happens.

This. I always carry a .22 pistol. Seems like the humane thing to do. Just put one round in the ear from a few feet away.

get a suppressor for it.. if it is a slow day, you can always sit and plink squirrels.

my old S&W model 15 .38 comes with my just for this...
last year the old man shot a nice 8 point and paralyzed it... as he was walking up it was trying to get up on its front legs he shot with his 308... blew off an antler... then shot again killing it.
Anyway generally it is a good idea to just wait for them to die.

In Texas, it is illegal to hunt "game animals" with a "silencer." Feral hogs are OK, deer are not. No matter your explanation of just using it to "finish it off," I'd bet money that your can would get confiscated if a game warden ever discovered it.
Why not put another bullet through the lungs? The deer isn't going anywhere anyway.
You tear up only rib meat insted of blowing an antler off.
As a fair chase only guide (thrown in because that is how my customers hunt) I carry a side arm to finish game if needed. Knives are dangerous and messy, if you have ever cut the neck on a live animal you won't forget it. A 9mm with your choice of self defense type ammo is all you need.

Nope.. Perfectly legal here. I hunt deer with a can as well.

Cut the throat ear to ear, through the wind pipe, then reach and grab the nose in one hand and an ear or antler in the other. Then give a sharp quick tug.
