I just got a call from a good friend of mine. He was a neighbor of mine when I lived in Texas. He owns 30 acres next to my farm with a really nice barn/house. Its not his residence but more of a weekend home to get out of the big city. Well, being my neighbor, he always invited me over for beers and good conversation and that is how we became good friends. Well he owns 125k acres in New Mexico and he throws a really nice week long deer hunting trip each year. He only takes 6 people with him and usually the same people go each year. Well one of the six bailed out for next year and he threw me an invite. I am really excited as I have been listening to some of their hunting stories and they always seemed to have a good time. Well to make a long story short, I need to build a gun that will be effective for the rugged terrain and distances out to 400 yards. Every one shows up with something different each year, almost like a competition, so I would like to show up with something unique. I have enough bolt guns and would like to show up with something like a M1A. I have always wanted one and this would be enough justification to get one. Everyone out there has hard-ons for magnums for some reason even though the longest shot taken was just at 400 yards.
For some reason an Egyptian Hakim and a Russian SVT-40 come to mind.

Funny you mention the SVT-40! I saw one the other day at one of our local gun shows. Was in pretty nice condition.
