 Never shoot your cross bow straight up

As you probably know the only safe way to decock a cross bow is to shoot an arrow. Well I got tired of shooting into the ground and then struggling to get it out. So I thought to myself why not shoot it straight up and then pick it up after wards. Well I pointed skyward and man that arrow goes up and out of sight fast! I have no clue where the hell it went, I think it may have stuck in a cloud? I looked for a bit thinking that it would nose over because of the heavy target tip, but I may have been wrong. Oh well it was only $5.

You should have made sure to aim perfectly straight up so that it would land close to you. Then maybe you could have heard it land.

i keep a target out and shoot it when i come in the door. i pull out my hunting arrow and use a field point. might be a little safer then shooting it up into the air.

Ummm....why not just grab the string with both hands, hold on tight, then have someone else pull the trigger while you ease the string down (been doing this for years with no problems)?

Shooting a bolt into the air is .

I had a bit of an angle when I shot it. I don't want it to hit me in the head, of course I'd get coloring books for Christmas the rest of my life!

I was being facetious. I'm sure you angled it away from yourself, but did you know which way and how hard the wind was blowing two or three hundred feet up? It may well have landed behind you. It may actually be safer to shoot it straight up, but not much.

When I hunt with my crossbow I bring my Target along in the jeep and just shoot into the Target before I leave. Perfectly safe and I get to verify zero.

All i could see in my mind was the OP shooting an arrow up and it coming down inches from him

When I was hunting with a crossbow last year, I just used the cocking string and got it tight, pulled the trigger, and let the bow string down easy. It was easy to do and I only had one working arm at the time.

Another reason to own an Excalibur crossbow. It's as easy to decock as it is to cock.

how are you gonna explain your self when they find your bolt in a dead hunter, or hiker or someones pet? When shoot anything you need to consider the worst thing that could happen, and try to mininze if not completely elimate and chance of your projectile hitting anything other then you intend.. If the bold and braod head were only worth 5$ id rather shoot it in a tree and loose the damn thing then risk injuring or killing somthing...

Well "if" I were to hit another hunter he would be trespassing on my land which is posted. I was in the middle of a 100 acre field as well. The wind was blowing about 10mph at my back. The only thing in danger of getting hit was my truck. Oh and I am not going to try to hold the string on a 250lb draw bow that cost $900 either. I'd rather lose a $5 arrow than blow m bow up!

I'm telling you it is easy to do. I was shooting a 225 pound Horton and with one arm in a sling, I was able to decock it with no problems.

The Arrow and the Song
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

I shot an arrow into the air,
It fell to earth, I knew not where;
For, so swiftly it flew, the sight
Could not follow it in its flight.

I breathed a song into the air,
It fell to earth, I knew not where;
For who has sight so keen and strong,
That it can follow the flight of song?

Long, long afterward, in an oak
I found the arrow, still unbroke;
And the song, from beginning to end,
I found again in the heart of a friend.

eta: Sorry. Must be the beer.
