Let's make this a thread about kids getting their first deer!
I let two kids and their dads on my place this week end for the kids to deer hunt.
One dad took his 9 yo daughter out of school for opening morning and she got her first deer.
I got a bigger rush out of that than dropping a state record whitetail
Here is her and the deer dropped in it's tracks with one shot at 75 yards.

We had a single shot 30/30 for her to use but she wanted a muzzle loader like her father hunts with. (He's a hard core deer hunter with a real preference for single shots.)
Her dad got her a T/C Wolf in 50 and that is what she dropped the deer with. It was a quartering shot in front of the left hip and stopped under the skin behind the right shoulder. I believe he said it was a 200 grain T/C bullet with two pellets of Pyrodex (100 grains total).
Here is the picture of the bullet we recovered skinning the deer. (Sorry, my macro skills ain't good when my hands were full of blood and fat.)

The bullet did well. I suppose it was one of those polymer tipped bullets from the look of it.
Sorry but I didn't get pics of the skinned carcass to show the broken ribs on the exit side.
Hell of a good day yesterday!
I've got another kid hunting there this morning. I'm hoping to get a call any minute to get up there and help them with the deer.
Life is good guys when you take the young ones hunting. Never pass up the opportunity to take a kid hunting or let them hunt.

Look at that smile! And a memory that will last a lifetime.

You're a good man for letting them hunt your land.

Dan,
That is great.

I have been busy assisting a Buddy who bought a new place.
He just had surgery to correct some things from when he should of zigged, when he zagged in Iraq.

Been building a platform shooting stand for him (and to take the young ones with him) an 8 X 8 deck.
Built some feeders, put out ladder stands in case recovery goes better than planned.
Cameras out and so on.

I was with him when he took his first Buck (a 198 yard shot with a 243 using Federal Fusions) a couple of years ago.
That gave me more of a thrill than killing it myself.

I must admit the fever just hasn't got me this year.
I am 4 weeks out from my annual family trip to MO.
If all goes well, we will have 4 generations in camp again this year. (14 yr old ––––87 yr old).
Won't know until all of us make it in, but we had 16 hunters in camp last year.

I am hoping that the 16 yr old gets to kill a Buck this year.
He missed a GREAT 10 pt last year . BUT... he did manage to kill our bean field!!!!!!!
I just looked at him, shook my head, and Said... Boy you need a keeper.
( I could of shot the Buck on 3 different occasions, but wanted him to get the Buck)
Every time he was hunting with his Grandpa, I would see the Buck, Then when he hunted with me, we wouldn't see him.

The 14 yr old has taken a Buck for the past 2 years. So if the 16yr old doesn't do it this year, the RAZZING will be ON!!!

ETA: Georgia's rifle season starts next week and I'm going to try to get one of my nephews out in the woods with me on opening day and hopefully I can post a similar thread sometime next saturday. It worked last year with his older brother but the younger nephew is still looking for his first kill. I hope to fix that for him sometime this season.

B, I'm an E-vampire. That means I thrive on enthusiasm instead of blood.
Seeing that kid grinning over that buck had me grinning big enough to swallow a buzzard.
Made me think of my boys getting their first deer.
I'm a little over a year from turning 60 and hunting events like this make me forget the artificial joints, shoulder operations, etc.
Seeing her and her dad ecstatic is one big buzz for me.
My buddy PC and his son saw deer this morning but didn't get a shot.
I'll be close when he gets one. Seeing that will make it one of the best deer hunting seasons for me in a long time!

More success this morning. patrickcudd, a friend here on ArfCom, son Kyler killed a nice buck. I'm not gonna tell the story, I'll let PC do it.
The Good Lord blessed me twice this week end. I'm a lucky guy to see this stuff.
Here's Kyler's first buck.

Got to admire kids who choose to do it with a single shot.

When you only have 1 shot, make it count.

Dan was gracious enough to allow my son the opportunity to take his first deer. He was pumped about getting the chance to hunt deer for the first time.
At about 7:40 Sunday morning I spotted a doe at the pond getting a drink at about 70 yards. Kyler then spotted three more does and a buck. The buck took a few minutes to get all the way up on the dam where Kyler could take a shot. I told him to shoot as soon as he had a clear shot. He fired a few seconds later and the buck disappeared on the other side of the dam. The deer ran about 75 yards into the woods. Dan's expert tracking buddy came and located it for us. It field dressed at 140 lbs.

Kyler was shooting a T/C Encore in 6.8 SPC.

We made a cursory look/see but I didn't push the search too hard because the brush on my place is VERY thick in some places. I got my partner out to find it for us simply because he is one of the best I've ever seen at tracking deer. I'm partially color blind in the light green/orange spectrum so I'm not too sharp on seeing the blood on the ground. We would have found it but my partner did it double quick.
Guys, all I can say is seeing the grin on Kyler's face brought a much bigger one to me.
And Patrick wasn't exactly frowning either.
The kids need experiences like this if we want our hunting heritage to continue in the future.
Kyler and Patrick, Morgan and Red, her dad, all gave me one huge gigantic buzz this last week end.
It was a great time for me!!!!!

If you talking about having that much fun again, I certainly hope too.
I'm pretty satisfied right now, and happy as hell.
I will put some meat in the freezer just because I want to.
But I won't have near as much fun doing it as I did watching these kids get deer.
You know exactly what I mean by that too.

My thirteen yr. old nephew got his first deer last weekend. This is our third season hunting together and our first to get a deer. In the past I've been way too busy to do any scouting and could only hunt one or two days a season. This year my schedule has changed and I took advantage of it and did some scouting and found us a spot on public land.

We were on the edge of a bean field in some tall grass when just after sun up a group of about ten deer came running from our left where we couldn't see them and before we knew it they were standing ten yards in front of us. To say we were surprised would be an understatement. The one buck in the group then started to walk into the tall grass right next to us. He got about fifteen feet from my nephew before he figured out something wasn't right and ran back into the bean field with the does.

I looked over at Micheal and he had the rifle up, but the end of he barrel was swinging around like crazy. The deer moved a little farther away from us and he was able to get his shooting stick and steady the gun. He made a perfect shot on the buck and he dropped within fifty yards. He was shooting my .223 Savage LW Varminter with Remington Core Lokt ammo.

Posted this in the 2011-2012 deer thread but hey I am one proud daddy.

14 year old daughters first Deer.

rifle: AR15 Parts gun
Lower- OLY arms PCR 99
Upper numbered flat top from Bravo Company USA
Bolt and carrier - Model 1 sales
JP adjustable gas block
YHM railed free float tube
Lower parts kit- M & A
Stock S&W M&P take off
Scope- NC STAR 3x9
BIS Front YHM
BIS rear Knights 300m
Barrel: Remington 700 .308 pull off barrel, 1-10twist, chamber cut off re-chambered to .300 Blackout, profiled and threaded for barrel extension gas block in carbine position

.300 Blackout
180gr prototype low velocity expander
14.5g AA1680
Velocity:1475 FPS
Distance: about 20 feet in front of the stand.

My daughter saw her before I did. She came up from our right, my daughter was sitting on the right side. She watched us then would move a few feet, look at us again, move a little. Put her head down to eat several times. She clearly saw us. My daughter froze as soon as she saw her, whispered "deer" to me. As she moved in a 1/4 circle to our front, my daughter would slowly get her rifle in position while the doe was looking away or her head was behind a tree. It looked like she was going to head straight away from us and go to the corn feeders 50 yds in front of us. But instead she turned back and walked right in front of my daughter. She was at a slight angle towards us when I whispered the shot was hers. she was already lined up, I was ready to go with another .300 blackout AR if she froze up, but she broke the shot, I saw the impact, the doe bucked, ran straight across in front of us to the left and then veered right about 90 degrees.

She went about 40yds straight line distance, but ran about 60 yds before she crashed. Initial blood trail was hard to follow but after about 30 feet she was clearly bleeding out, woods were kind of thick where she ran but once I found the blood trail it was easy to follow. I had left my daughter in the stand, until I could see where the doe was down then I went back and got her and had her follow the trail to the deer. My daughter was all excited, but honestly I think I am more excited.

You think her grin is big, you should have seen mine.

Congratulations to all on some great-looking deer. It's wonderful to see young people take an interest in hunting instead of all the lesser things they could be doing. I didn't start hunting until I was 27, and now reflect on all the missed outdoor opportunities that I had growing up.

I'm one of a very small percentage of males who suffer from Protanomaly, which sucks when you are a deer hunter. I can see red, but cannot see deer blood on the ground unless it is very copious and close to my face. Once it dries, forget it. I have friends who can walk upright at a brisk pace on a bloodtrail and say, "There's blood...there's blood" while walking along, and it amazes me. Red must really stick out and be bright for those will normal vision.

I can see "Plate 1" in the following test, but nothing in subsequent plates.

Damn, I can't see anything but the 16 on the first one either. I can distinguish colors for the most part but can't see crap on those online pics,
I guess I'm getting worse in my old age - 59 in a few months.

FWIW, I think men miss a lot when they don't get to fish and/or hunt as kids.
But even getting into it when you are an adult like you did is still a great thing!

Awesome, getting a child and a young lady into the sport.

She got some blood in her eyes when you put it on her face.

Great rifle, I have the same one. Been using it for quite awhile.
But going to try the new CZ550 30-06 I picked up this year.

Here is my 9yo daughter with the 8 point buck she shot on the family farm this morning.

She shot it at about 70 yards from a pop up ground blind. She was using the Spike's Tactical AR15 she bought this summer. She paid for the rifle from money she made by making and selling survival bracelets and keychains. I provided the Aimpoint Comp M2 and AAC M4-2000 and some other things I had laying around the shop. I figured she bought the rifle, the least I could do was accessorize it

She made a great double lung shot with a Federal Fusion 62gr round. The Fusion round is an absolute hammer!! It spent all of it's energy in the cavity and performed great.

I was shaking more than her It's hard to describe the feeling I had this morning.

Not the best pic, but here it is:

Heck, if we get lucky, we may see some ardent hunters taking kids into the field for the first time for their first deer.
A child's enthusiasm is a wonderful thing to behold.
All I can say is I coached soccer for a dozen years or so. I did clinics for kids under 6 for years. I required the boys from my team to help when they reached the under 14 level. They hated the idea the first time.
After they did it, they loved the younger kids getting excited about being with the big boys.
Even my boys' parents loved it.
Guys, take a kid hunting.
The rewards are far greater than you know.
It may very well be a life experience that they will never forget for decades.
And you can be the one responsible for it.

My son on the morning of his 12th birthday and also the opener of antelope season. Took this 13inch antelope buck with one shot at 204 yards (via laser range finder):

That same year in November, his first deer a 4X4 whitetail buck, one shot at 326 yards:

He also got a doe a few minutes later since he had double tags:

We shot a ton of priarie dogs prior to his hunting, I contribute that to his ability to shoot well. His rifle is a Thompson Encore Hunter in .308. He also has a .223 barrel for it for priarie dog shooting. He had a great first year of hunting. I couldn't have been more happy!

A 4X4 whitetail that he shot with my 6.5 Grendel build. He had his Encore but the Harris bipod that is on didn't allow him to shoot up hill, so I gave him my Grendel to shoot, that has a higher adjustable Harris bipod on it:

We'll be going out this weekend, the opening for priarie deer. Hopefully he'll get a muley this year.

I make two, same problem here. I can read the first plate, the rest are just colored circles. Sucks, but my buddy sees it well enough for tracking.
Great pics of the kids. Glad to see them hunting, especially the girls. I teach hunter safety at our club and seem to see more girls showing up than even a few years ago for the classes.

My 7 year old got his first buck this year (on his first hunt). We saw this buck in the morning, but a hog scared him off before he got a shot. He killed the hog at 150 yards, one shot, dead right there. That afternoon the buck returned. He got him at 125 yards. He had to tell me to take my hand off his chair, as I was shaking it. I was definitely more nervous than he was.

He made a perfect behind the shoulder through both lungs shot on the broadside buck, who fell in his tracks. He used a Bushmaster 24" varminter with a Springfield 4-14 on a LRB lower I built. A2 stock, RRA match 2 stage trigger. He used Speer Gold Dot 64 gr, and it went through and through on both the hog and the deer. I was VERY impressed with it's performance.

The buck is a 15 1/8" 10 point. We were on my FIL's lease, and during the special youth season, 2 bucks (including his) and 5 doe were taken by kids. Two others were first time kills. All the kids, the dads, and the granddads were stoked.

Of course the boy is ready to go back!

POSTING FROM DEER CAMP.............................

SCORE... Nephew took his first Buck. A mature 8pt.
Really not sure who is happier... Him or Me.
Saw a doe, and he was ready to take her, I kept telling him to wait to see if there was a Buck behind her.
I saw the Buck ( but couldn't tell if was a legal Buck or not (4pts on one side)).
Kept Glassing him, and finally was able to get a clear view. SAID TAKE HIM!!!
KABOOM! He hammered him with his new Marlin XS7S in 308, at 45 yards.
Jumped about 2 feet in the air, walked 10 feet and fell over dead.
I am glad I had him strapped in with a Hunter Safety System, was worried he was going to jump out of the stand. He was so excited.

No ability to post pics.

Now we just have to get the other youngster a Buck.
ETA: Done deal. The 14 yr old got a Great mature 8pt today at around 3:30pm
He was hunting with another family member, so I don't have the full story.
But a very nice looking Buck.

4 Generations in Camp again this year.

Great pictures guys, I can't wait till my little guy is old enough! After I got home this week, my P-I-C asked me if we were going to the deer woods so he could get him a deer. He's only 3, so he's still got a bit left on him but next year were going to try and take him out bow hunting with us some.

Also, when he saw my antlers (small 8pt) he asked if he could have them so he could wear them.

Thanks for posting it B!
Can't wait to see the pics!

Also, when he saw my antlers (small 8pt) he asked if he could have them so he could wear them.

He's gonna be a hunter I know.

This is the kinda thing that make me smile!!! There is nothing like seeing the smile on a youngster when they get there first deer.

My daughter got her first deer this year. The greatest thing is she took it with the same old Stevens 20ga. that was handed down to me by my Dad when I took my first deer with many years ago. Then handed down to her older brother when he took his first deer with it . Now it has been handed down to her. Talk about a tradition with that old gun.

At first, she wasn't too thrilled with the cleaning, but she knows the rules, you kill it you clean it.

After a little coaching from me and her older brother, she carved out the backstraps for dinner.

Reportedly killed by a 15-year old girl in Griffin, IN (Posey County) on her first hunt ever. Buck is rumored to score well past the 200" mark, and may give the state record non-typical killed in 1977 (254") a run for its money.

Congratulations to ALL in this thread. It's great to see kids with their trophies.

My 10 year old got his first deer yesterday.
Took a 5 point buck with his 20 gauge 870 using iron sights.
He was pretty nervous because he missed a doe on Friday that was closer than this one (~30 yards).
He's pretty excited about going out for second season now.
