Extra Exam

Just a reminder to those how have been preparing to take the Extra Exam... the New question pool will be coming out June 30, 2012...
Only a few months left to get this done under the current question pool....
Yes, I have been wanting to get this done... so, tonight I went down and visited my local gang of VE inquisitors...
They are a scary bunch... don't smile much... The movie "Grumpy Old Men" comes to mind....
When I told them I was here to take the Extra Exam, in unison, they all looked at me over the rim of their glasses... in a way I felt I was being scaled... and found lacking...
While I tried to stand firm and uphold my end of this face off... who is going to look away first... I saw no quiver or flinch on the other side of the table... cuss, I looked away first... these guys are an intimidating bunch and wiry haired, impatient professor looking kind of guys, with furrowed brows and unfriendly intimidation expressions.
I am escorted to my seat and provided with my exam.... what felt like 3 min later, I hand the exam back for grading. The answer sheet is passed to the VE for grading. They make great ceremony of pulling out their grading templets, scouring over my answers... looking up at me on occasion in yet another appraising way...
While I am wiping sweat from my brow and fidgeting side to side in my seat... the exam is passed from one VE to the other... finally, they let me know that yes, you managed to pass....
I asked them, How many did I miss? they waited an uncomfortable length of time before answering... they replied, this time with smiles... Why, you only missed one, you must have really studied for this.
I paused for a few seconds, holding each one in my casual gaze... and replied.... Are you telling me there is a book you can get to study for this test?
First time I saw them smile all night... :)
Glad this is over and now onward to getting real serious about CW.... woo hoo!!

Thanks.... Yea... they got a chuckle out of that.... I recently joined our local club (unlike them, I'm not a social kind of guy), so I have met a few of these guys... they are your typical hams and just really good people, very eager to help and assist as needed... obviously, I was taking liberty with with description above...
testing was great, the VE's were very enouraging... great group of guys... once you get past the gaze over the top of their glasses... lol....

Yep, happy to get this done... one of those important hurdles...
One day you are I are going to have an actual QSO... we need to start working on that...
My antenna's currently suck... working on a 20m moxon, when I get that up, maybe we can try for a sked....
My neighborhoon, I have to hide the whole antenna thing, so I get a kick out of making an antenno look like squirel feeder.... king of a big and long squirrel feeder, but.... :)

Kinda... you can go straight to Extra...
But, you do have to take all three exams in turn...
you can do all three in one sitting....
So, you sit down and take the Technician exam, they grade it, you pass and they allow you to continue.
You take the General exam, they grade it, you pass it, and then you continue.
You take the Extra Exam, they grade it, you pass it, and you are done....
Can be done... not very often, but it can be done.
But, you do have to take all three exams in turn...

Congrats, my last session as a VE the only guy to take the Extra test only got 3 right. I tried hard not to give him a WTF face.

Extra in just a four steps.
1. Get the study guide with only the correct answers.
2. Lose your job
3. Spend 2 weeks in the hot tub studying
4. Pass the test.

I passed all 3 in one sitting.
There are a frightening amount of patterns in the extra question pool. If you take enough practice tests to pick up on the patterns, it gives you a huge edge on the test.
