Going portable today! Now with AAR (AFR)

Will be on the 20m digital guard channel (14.067.5) in a couple of hours. I'm going out into the desert and set up. This trip I'm leaving the tuner at home and going to try to construct something "resonant" on site. I'll have plenty of antenna "fixins" with me as well as a backup 20m inverted vee if all else fails.
See you on the air!

I didn't know which one of these to quote so I picked the last rnd fired!

Funny!? The waterfall here at the QTH is nothing but blue. It's either that quiet or
my antenna is that deaf.

Well here is the AFR (After Fail Report). I got out to where I wanted to setup and there
were already lots of campers so I decided to venture out a little farther. Finding a decent
spot with a bit of shade was tough as the trees aren't very tall. I set up my little
portable vertical and commenced to tuning it up.

I broke out my MFJ 207 antenna analyzer only to find the battery was weak and wouldn't work
properly. Battery #1 failure.

I then dragged out my trusty 20m inverted vee as backup, but having no tall trees, I had to
hang it only 6ft up.

Anyways, I was on the air. I sent 3 or 4 CQ ARFCOM transmissions over the next 45 minutes or
so but got no replies. I went over to 14.070.0 to try some PSK and upon the first
transmission, the radio blinked and went into fits. I thought, oh crap.
I tried to start the Jeep only to hear the dreaded click click click.

The battery was so dead it wouldn't even operate my VHF/UHF mobile on low power, 5W.
Luckily I could stand on my bumper and get cell service. I called my Aunt and Uncle to
rescue me!

Lesson learned, never leave the spare battery at home! I ALWAYS take it with me when
operating portable, but today I said "I'll only be out for a couple of hours. The Jeep
battery will be enough.."

Equipment used was an Icom IC-706mk2g (25W), homebrew audio interface cable (VOX PTT) and a
homebrew 20m inverted vee.

Yup, good 'ol Blue. I could have walked out to the highway, but I think I might have drawn attention with an AR slung, 2 pistols on my hip and carrying two cases of electronics gear.
Still a good day to be out in the desert.

lots of good lessons learned here today...like don't refresh ARFCOM from the cell after posting on board

What an cool adventure for you today! Sometimes I travel via airline and think when I land in a new place, if I placed a station on the air on top of that tall hill or small mountain, how far could I reach. EmComm box is not built yet but that would be great to go portable as you have done.

Friday a day trip to Orlando then Monday check on a project in El Paso if only I had my rig ready...

Thanks for inspiration.

Wel,l that is why it is good to practice running portable. I have gotten in the habit of bringing my portable power station with me on any portable ops or even any road trips. Damn dead batteries always happen at the most inconvenient time and place.

Good to hear you got home safe, and did no have to blade @ 45

Yes he is. He is 10 years old now and getting lazy. He used to chase all the cows we saw. Now he'll chase them for a few minutes and then lay down and watch them.
