Best deep cycle battery
I am in the market for a deep cycle battery to run my electric trolling motor. Is the Everstart brand at wallyworld any good ? They are the cheapest around me. A local guy on craig's list has brand new Crown brand deep cycles for $108. Seems online Crown has a good rep. I am not sure if it matters in batteries though.
I just got my boat ready to go last week. For starting my 15HP Mercury I am using a six-year old Everstart marine trolling battery. As a matter of fact it was bought new when my dad bought the Mercury 15HP I mentioned in the summer of '05. The battery was used that summer, and a little in '06 and sat unused until my dad gave me his boat and motor last summer. I haven't had any problems with it not holding a charge.
I also use a smaller Everstart marine battery for my trolling motor. It was bought new in the spring of '07. So far it has done well the few times I've used it since last summer. Even though China Mart isn't too highly thought of around here my two batteries seem to be holding up just fine.
See below
I've used them all at one time or another over the past 25 or so years...
AC Delco has always performed the best.
What ever battery you do buy...pick up a smart charger...and always keep it topped off.
On board smart charger (Minn-Kota) seems to give me more power longer than anything I've ever used. Most of the time I use Everstart because I get 10% off cause wife works at WM.
The 1st battery i purcashed was a Everstart from wm. just for my trollin motor. Lasted 3 years and I stopped using the boat. My Dad snatched it up and tied it in with 2 others for his camper and lasted about 8 months and took a dive. I think I also used it as a starter battery for my ole chevy pickup as a emergency for awhile before my dad got ahold of it.
I have used the Everstart's for years now. If I do have a battery go down, there is a Wal-Mart almost everywhere to get it exchanged. And most are open 24 hours.
I bought the 24 series Crown deep cycle battery and I am very pleased. I have used it on close to 50 fishing trips to local electric only lakes. My boat is an 11 foot fibeglass dinghy with a 30# thust motor and fishfinder. I can troll constantly for 4 hours on a charge which to me seems great. I would expect a much longer charge lenght if I was not trolling, but that is how I fish the majority of the time. If I run the battery down to 80% dicharged it will fully recharge on a ten amp charger in just 3 hours. I charge the battery after every trip unless I fished for only an hour.
