I use to fish when I was really young, and I am looking to get back into it, but all that knowledge past has since left.

What I would like to know is what would be a good fishing rod for dual purpose salt/fresh water fishing in Florida? Nothing too fancy, decent priced yet reliable.

And what would I need bare minimum to go out and just start fishing? I am heading to Bass Pro tomorrow but I know if I were to ask them they try to push some expensive rod on me without helping me with the basics.

get a 6.5 foot 20lbs ugly stick and a 4500 shimano baitrunner for a reel. now you can bass fish and light saltwater. rod about 50 reel about 125.

whoaaa there. He said fresh and salt water. Have you ever tried throwing lures with a heavy ass ugly stick and a 4500 baitrunner. Thats a huge combo to do both.

If I had to pick one rod and reel combo for the gulf coast inshore fishing and freshwater it would be a 6 ft 6inch medium xtra fast tip rod with a shimano reel in the 2500 series size (or daiwa equivalent). Fill up one spool with power pro and the other with 10# mono.

I appreciate both of your guys responses, but I am not sure if I am follow exactly what it is you're both suggesting, any chance you could put it in lamens terms for this super noob?

Yes, actually I have for the last 25 years as a charter boat captain. use 30lbs spiderwire will do it all for you. Using a "bass" rod and reel for ocean fish is instant fail.
Its as lame as going hog hunting with .223 vmax bullets.

I agree with what fishing fool said. if he gets near saltwater 99% of it will be inshore, in which case a bass rig will be just fine.

here are my two main combos that do double duty, which I am sure are much more than the OP wants to spend but they are good:

spinning rig: this reel and this rod

casting rig: this reel and this rod

and i use this line in 12lb test

if you don't want to spend that much just take the stats off those and get a cheaper version or brand. cheap gear will tear up but by the time you tear it up you will probably have a good idea of what you need to replace it.

Hey man I just came from South Carolina where I use to fish all freshwater and now I'm in Florida and have done a little inshore fishing here. I'll provide links with my setup,

Rod
http://fish.shimano.com/publish/content/global_fish/en/us/index/products/rods/inshore/Clarus_Inshore_Spinning.html

I wouldn't go over 7ft rod you would prolly be better for a 6ft 6in medium to medium heavy rod.

Reel

I have mine in the 4000FB size as the numbers go up so does the size of the reel. Mine is set up for saltwater with 20 LB braided line with a clear monofilament leader. That is probably too heavy for freshwater but if you
can get an extra spool all the better.

Some tips for when you go to Bass Pro shops

-Ask for differences between braided and mono
-when to use a leader in salt water
-how to properly maintain your rod and reel mainly for after saltwater fishing
-visit local tackle store of wherever your fishing to find out what bait/lures is working at that time
-when you buy hooks make sure if your planning on salt water fishing make sure they are saltwater resistant
-Remember Buy once cry once

If your really I noob I suggest a spinning reel because they're easy to operate and easy to maintain I still use spinning reels bc of the fact their easy and I don't plan on going offshore anytime soon.
