Since moving within driving distance to the Texas coast my wife wants to get back into fishing... I am not knowledgeable at all about fishing, much less
salt water fishing - it just is not my sport. I just like to watch her have fun.

I want to get her a new setup for her birthday. I have been recommended a Shimano stratic reel and a 7' medium weight rod - is this good, bad? What kind of line?

You can tell from these questions I know nothing... What all would I need to get for her to be up and running with her own stuff?

Most fishing will be off the jetty or close in bay fishing. Any advice would be helpful

Any suggestions need to be what I can get down at Academy or Cabelas.

Thanks

The shimano stradic is a very nice reel. Be sure to get the proper model of the stradic - match it to your line weight. You do not want the ultralite version. A good 7 - 7 1/2 foot medium rod, and the stradic reel with 12lb test line would probably be my all around choice for close in bay fishing or fishing off the jetty. I have not been able to fish as much salt water as I would like, but that setup would suit me for the fishing you describe. While I would opt for the 12lb test, some folks would probably recommend 20 lb test, as most of the fish in the areas you describe would be under 20 pounds.

Matching the line weight to the reel is fairly important, so you may want to check things locally to see what folks recommend. You do not want to buy a reel set up for 12lb line and wind up wanting to spool it with 20lb line.

There really does not seem to be a lot of traffic here....First time I ever came here.
