low/mid cost range fish finder/depth finders - Need recommendations please

I grew up fishing where I knew the lakes and rivers like the back of my hand - now I am in a different place, with different fish, and I need a depth finder/fish finder pretty bad. I don't need GPS or anything really fancy (it'd be nice, but empty wallet says no).

I just need a decent system for my boat that can give me a decent sonar picture and depths so I can maybe come home with a few fish now and then. Any recommendations out there for cheaper units? I don't want to spend a lot of dough.

BTT - maybe I'd better put this into GD. Not enough people check the fishing forum.

What kind of boat? What kind of water? How deep?

I had a Lowrance X125 that served me well in shallow salt water.

I now have a complete Garmin 4212 system with XM weather. It's a great system, but probably WAY more than you are looking for.

I just have a little open bow runabout for fun with the family - 19' Bayliner Capri outboard. The lakes I will be fishing run up to 150 ft deep but mostly less than that, with varying types of bottoms. I fish for salmon/steelhead, trout, bass, walleye, northerns, etc. Mostly lake fishing but a might head into Puget Sound if I have time available when the salmon are running.

I've had great luck with Hummingbird over the years.

My current is a boat mount with hull sensor that I pop off and put on the battery bank that has a stopper sensor for my canoe. Its not fancy but very reliable, durable, and let's you know where the fish are in feet, approximate size, and a good picture of the bottom contour.

You can spend more and you can get prettier but its the information you are after.

What model Hummingbird? Puns aside, there seems to be a boatload of different models.

That sounds like exactly what I am looking for.

Thanks!

Lowrance X96 for 199.00. Good resolution, and same capabilities as the X125 -135 just not as many bells and whistles

Sorry I lost track of this thread.

Humingbird 565.

You can buy either the base 565 or the portable then buy the different mount and sensor.

With me I bought the 565 then later bought the portable case and sensor.
