Good guide or book on navigation, maps and compasses?

My neice is doing the Peace Corp. thing starting the fall 2012 semester. I figured that her having the knowledge, a map and a compass would be beneficial. She's making efforts to go to Latin America with Africa her 2nd choice, she's like her mother...there's no talking her out of it and she conveniently doesn't see the dangers she exposing herself to.

Any suggestions on the books?

I would keep her out of Africa......

Latin America isn't much better.... but in Africa.... the people aren't the only thing you have to worried about.
