Is Glenn Beck Reading "Deep Winter"? (Update at bottom of P. 1)

He commented on his radio show last Friday (3/4/11) "I'm reading this incredible book right now, it's a series, and I'm at this point where an EMP goes off, and you're like, what do you do for an EMP? What happens now?" (And he then goes on to plug "food insurance.")

The relevant quote is at the 41:45 mark at this link (you may need to be a subscriber, I'm not sure)

I'm only aware of two book series that include major EMP events: Tom's "Deep Winter" Series, and Blackstock's "Last Light" series. The latter *starts* with an EMP event (without ever really calling it that), so it would be somewhat of a stretch to have only read the first chapter or so, and then call it "an incredible book." I'm thinking "Deep Winter" is the much more likely candidate as the EMP event occurs later in the book.

It would sure boost Tom's business if Beck would call it out by name.

Yes, you need to be a subscriber. It's been awhile since I read Deep Winter, but I don't remember an EMP in it. They ran their computers off of generators he had stashed in the barn. I think there may be one in Remnant, but I don't recall one in the first book. Maybe I'm wrong though. He definitely said it was a series though? The only one that comes to my mind is Dies The Fire by S.M. Stirling. But they didn't call that an EMP, it was "the change", and it affected electrical and gun powder too.

I bet being of a religious background he is reading the Blackstock books.

"Lights Out" is about the aftermath of an EMP. I wondered if he was talking about that book.

I'm [very] familiar with Lights Out, but he very clearly said this book is part of a series. And to address a previous poster, I was referring to an EMP strike in the Deep Winter series, not necessarily that particular book. (I read the three of them back-to-back, so I'm a little fuzzy on what happens when.) But maybe I dreamed that up after also reading Lights Out and One Second After. (And Beck mentioned reading One Second After about a year ago.)

Guess I need to re-read the Deep Winter Series.

Deep Winter is about the aftermath of a large volcanic eruption in the Seattle area. No EMP's.

The third book "Distance" had an EMP.

The third book "Distance" had an EMP.

I wasn't aware that there was a third book. I thought it was just Deep Winter and Shattered.

My mistake, Remnant is the third book.

Distance is the fourth.

My bad!

Ask Tsherry for a PDF of Remnant.

The references to emp attacks in the deep winter series are very minor in the plot.

I think he's reading "The Great and the Terrible" series. They are LDS SHTF books, an EMP takes place.

Looks like we're all wrong. In Monday's show (3/14/11, Link, for subscribers, at 31:30), Beck talks more of the series, noting it is a 6-volume series and the author is a guy. Beck is trying to convince the author to sell him the story, not to publish in book form, but to publish on the Internet. Apparently written in 2006, much of what is talked about is now happening, and he views this fiction as yet another way to wake people up to what is going on.

Needless to say, with this sort of negotiation going on, he isn't mentioning the title.

I already said it is "The Great and Terrible" series. They are 6 volumes. Written by Chris Stewart. They are published in book form, some of that info. sounds wack.

Im reading Remnant now and the emp is very short part of a chapter. Barely worth mentioning. There is a mention of EMP in the second book but no impact. Dont want to give anything away, but the books are great.
