Just received a copy of What to do when the shit hits the fan by Dave Black. I bought this book simply because Jack Spirko of The Survival Podcast recommends it on his book list. In the future I will take his recommendations with many grains of salt.

I break it out and notice that it's geared towards someone who has no clue what the hell is going on. The problem is the book is incredibly vague on almost all of the topics. Not to mention he adds his opinion on things which make you go . He says that "body armor is just another gadget gadget the salesmen are trying to sell the paranoid public" Yet in the paragraph directly above that he states he wore armor faithfully while working on an ambulance in Northeast Wyoming for 20 years.(p217)

A quick look at the Appendix 1 reveals most of his sources are govt websites(Redcross, CERT, FEMA, EPA etc). I had decided to hold onto the book in case I may be able to find one nugget of info that could be helpful until I got to page 218. It speaks for itself:

I believe in the right to bear arms. It's a fundamental constitutional right. It's just too bad some people can't control their weapons. From personal experience I can tell that any handgun you keep in the home is more likely to be a weapon of homicide or suicide in your home and by family or friends than to be a weapon of self defense against a criminal, a rioting crowd or an intruder. Aside from the demise of two brothers and a nephew at the hands of their own weapons, my own experience on the street can't lie. In 17 years of paramedic practice I saw a few hundred suicides and homicides with personal weapons, but only a sing;e incident where a weapon was used for personal protection. That should be a major deterrent to keeping guns in a family home, but in reality most people live under the delusion that something like that just can't happen to them

A gun is another one of those gadgets the Chicken Little salesmen want to sell us....

One could argue the same is true for this guy's book.

Funny,I can recall at least 6 or more times when a gun in my hands meant that a threatening confrontation came out to nothing happening and everyone going their own way, and nobody that I know has ever shot a family member, but I know a guy who took his own life.

That's funny. Since he is trying to use his own "personal experience" he's not using the same old lie that many other anti-gun people trot out there, the old lie about a gun being "43 times more likely to be used against the owner". BTW, that lie has been traced back to the guy who made it up, and he admitted that he has NO data to base it on. He just pulled it out of his ass.
