Just bought and started reading Patriots
When was this book written? 2006?
I am in it about 75 pages so far, pretty damn good.
Go to survivorblog.com. That is the websight of the author. He has written a few since that was published. I read Patriots. Its a good read with a lot of good info. TK is the shit.
I finished that book about a month ago now. Actually saw it noted on the site somewhere here. I love the book! I've moved onto "How to survive the end of the world as we know it" by the same author. It's nothing like the other book... basically a book of ideas and suggestions on how to prepare for what could happen in the future.
Beginning of the book is SHOCKINGLY relevant. Almost reads like current headlines.
Not a bad book, Rawles is a good guy.
I enjoy survival blog more though, but EVERYBODY has read Patriots - even entry-level preppers I talk with.
I just finished reading it. Overall a good read. He gets into the weeds a bit much, but I just skip over it. Its also quite clear he has never seen real combat. He makes it seem like combat/killing is fun, or cool (ie, like most movies). It is nothing of the sort. It is terrifying. In the real world, if things went down like in the book, 99% of the women, and say 90% of the men would be looney toons by the time victory was achieved.

That criticism is certainly a valid one. I think Rawles might have been trying to set an empowering vibe (can-do) to the novel at times - Where the average person is often too-quick to dispel what he or she can or cannot do.
Overall. I like the book. It makes you realize how much we count on being able to buy goods and services. If that chain is broken for more than a short period of time most of us us would die (general pop.). It's all about beans, bullets, band-aids, and a tight group of friends/family. I'm just starting to prep. I'm having trouble getting gf and family to do some. Most prepping seems to be relatively cheap, but you have to start.
I read it, liked it, but I wouldn't base my plan off of that book. It is a page turner though.
I guess I am the odd man out. I did not care for the book at all. I kept waiting for it to get "better" but it never did. I can not even bring myself to recommend it to anyone. I like the author and have spent a lot of time on his site. I guess I just expected a book that did not seem to be written by a high school student.(That's just how it seemed to me) I know many people are fans of the book, I just happen not to be one of them.
The book is complete and utter garbage. Follow its recommendations and die. I've read better stuff from ten year olds. It's the only book among thousands that I have read in my 52 years that went straight into the garbage after I finished it just so nobody else would be contaminated from reading it.
I really enjoyed the book as much as I did Lights Out and Cold Camp.. I wouldn't call it garbage but that's just my opinion and we all have them. Read it and if you like it and it gets you more into preping then it was a good read. Its fiction so ENJOY it. It's not a how to manuel. Just be smart and take away some of the good ideas in the book and you'll be fine. Common rifle calibers and food storage are good ideas and not garbage. Good FICTION book.
Good Book.
One Second After is also a good read.
+1 for One Second After. GREAT SHTF read..... Well written and a page turner all the way.....
I'm about 1/2 way through my first read of it. So far its pretty good.

It was a damn hard read for me.
My daughter is Type I and my grandmother is in a nursing home. For those who've read this book, you'll understand.
I had to put it down and walk away a few times while reading it.
Not a JWR fan here, just my personal opinion. Book is in dire need of an editor. I understand what he is trying to do, just not to hot, in my view.
/shrug
"Reach out, reach out and touch some one, reach out, reach out and just say .......DIE!"
I laughed pretty good at that. Until the very next page anyways.

Idiot deserved to get wasted. Accomplished not a damn thing in the process.
I really enjoyed Patriots. I don't read to good anyway. It is the only book that I re-read immediately after finishing. I admit, there are some ridiculous parts. But it's fiction, by a guy that has only wrote one book, albeit, several versions. It was a page turner.
One Second After is very good and so is Lights Out and the Bug Out. I was very disappointed with Enemies: Foreign and Domestic. I could not finish it. It was so slow and boring. I get it: retired Special Forces personnel have integrity and Government cops don't. The guy was fixing a boat and wanted to leave and go sailing. The chick was a good looking tomboy that shot well. BORING! I tried to get it at the library, since I hate paying retail for a book. I bought it here in EE for $15 after seeing it on Ebay for $40; I thought it had to be good. I can see it in on my bookshelf, right now, with two thirds of pristine, unturned pages.
I gave Patriots to my nephew, he gave it to my brother, he gave it to his other son. I want it back to read again.
I agree with the previous posts that think reading Patriots is a waste of time. Poorly written, story is incredibly predictable, characters are one-dimensional, etc. One Second After is the standard. Looking fwd to reading Lights Out in a paper version (reading books on computers sucks). One last thing, anybody know if that is Rawles' face on the cover of Patriots? I'm sorry, but if so that is incredibly lame. And what is up with the apostrophe after his middle name?
I just finished Patriots a few days ago. It wasn't bad, but there are a lot better out there. Tom Sherry's Deep Winter series is a whole lot
better, Lights Out, and One Second After too. There was a story posted here called "Normal" written by arfcommer Grand58742 that was 10 times better that Patriots. Similar situation (cabin/retreat) but more action, more people, and better thought out. It was a little gear porn heavy in the beginning, but after that it was great. There's a sequel to it called "Tales Of The Ranch:Operation Eris", but I haven't read that one yet.

Actually JWR touts the book as a "how to manual, lightly disguised as a novel" or words to that effect, and while it's got some interesting points and varying qualities of information, overall it's crammed with childish, pompous, self contradicting blabber.
Ever notice how similar the eighth grade writing style of the various posts submitted by so many different contributors on survival blog is...?

I think it started in the 90s. The 1st draft of it was called the Gray 90s I think. Then I had it off the internet in 2000 on floppy disks and it was called Triple Ought (000). The newest update was 2006 I think. There he added more 9/11 and Kimber 1911s and some updates to make the read more current. For what it's worth it is my "favorite" book just because it was the 1st thing that got my mind right.
I listened to the abridged version this weekend as I drove home from some reserve duty.
I was surprised that the heroes of the book were stopping passersby on the road in front of their house and ordering them to drop their weapons and be searched. Sure enough, later in the book when someone tried to pull that on them, they started yelling about how they were on a public road. I hate hypocrites.
It really went downhill with the whole UN suspending the constitution part.
I just picked up Patriots this weekend. It is the first book I have read in years...never been much of a book reader just couldn't find anything that interested me. Patriots has gotten me interested in books. I am over halfway through the book in just a few days. It is very entertaining and is a page turner for sure and also has some great points but you definitely cannot take it for a how-to manual. The book does have me reprioritizing a little and has me thinking of a few things that I had not before in regards to my preps.
I will pick up lights out and one second after...after I am done with Patriots.
I have read it twice and its not too bad, a few chapters are out of place and the ending to me is weak. Also read TEOTWAWKI as not bad
One Second After is way better and it is set right here in the county I live in so I know the places and some of the people he based his characters on.
Currently I'm reading Lights out not a bad read.
The moral is these are fiction works.
Make your choices and prepare the best you can
