Bracken's Enemies Trilogy
I just finished Matthew Bracken's Enemies Trilogy and I wanted some feedback from other people that have read them.
I found that they were good reading and kept my attention.
I did not pick up any survival tips other than have guns, ammo and gold.
My favorite of the three was last one about the civil war and greater depression. I found the plot plausible and very chillling.
I got 50 pages and Im done with them...I have loved every page so far...
The first book was excellent. The second book was terrible, took me forever to read it, just dry and boring. Sold it on the EE as soon as I finished it. Haven't read the third one, but might try it if enough people think it is worth reading.
I really enjoyed the 1st and 3rd book.
The 2nd book was difficult to get through.
i've been thinking about picking up the trilogy as i haven't found a decent new shtf read in a while, i'm always looking for more good shtf fiction...
i would possibly be interested in picking these up, as well as "unintended consequences" if any one has them and wants to trade them for some cash PM me...

The third book was the best in my opinion. The theme involving the POTUS was disturbing and makes you think.

Completely agree...First book was very good and easy to read, second book took a while (picked it up, put it down, etc...), and the third was the best of all. I thought it was well worth it. I thought they were well written and not over the top on the fantasy. Actually, the third book could be read as a stand alone book. While it mentions some previous events, it doesn't really feed on the plots of the first two.
Really liked the 1st one. I have tried twice to read through the 2nd one without much luck. I may just skip it and go buy the third.

I do think the 1st and 3rd were great, but I did really like the 2nd one. Growing up in So Cal and seeing how it has changed over there years, is why I think I liked it.
Cant wait for his new one to come out!
the third hit home the most for me as I live in Tn . good set of books . unintended con. has taken quite a while to get going . I juat can't get involved in it due to the jumping around .
I finished the first one last month and am currently about a third of the way through with the second... The second one doesnt have me completely hooked so I keep reading just a little bit at a time. Hope to have it done sometime next week. Im looking forward to the third though!

Meh... read the 1st, about a third of the second, and that was enough for me.
I wanted to like them... nope.
just ordered all three... i'll get back once i'm done if the thread is still active...

I thought they were all good. I feel they third one was the best. It really makes you think, Never allow yourself to get rounded up in to a large group.
I've got all three. Enjoyed them all. Isn't there a 4th coming out soon?
Read all three and I think the series keeps growing, getting more and more intereting after each book.
Notice it goes from liberal anti gun times, then to an economic collapse stage and then a total authoritarian/facist state. Often that's just how it turns out. The transition between each, how lives are during each is well described in my opinon. The gunfights are well written (no spoilers so I wont go into details)
I found lots of good survival tips actually. It's a true novel so maybe you have to read it a couple times but there's several tips there that I haven't thought of.
I think he did a terrific job. Probably the only survival fiction other than Halffast's "Llights Out" that I constantly reccomend to people.
FerFAL
I am a big fan of your writing FerFAL.
Nice to see you posting here.
First started reading your posts on the falfiles in 2004 and then on frugals until something went wrong (never knew what that was.)
Was happy to see you do your own thing and successfully publish your book.

+1 the last book was by far the best
i'm only not quite half way through "Domestic enemies"(the seond one) right now, fucking job and all making the reading slow going.
after a couple months of having been unemployed i guess i got spoiled with lots of free time, i really miss having the time to read but like having the money to buy books, it's a real catch 22...

Well that bums me out that the first one is the best. I'm at around page 180 and it is S-L-O-W. I am hoping that a little action will start. The dude is about to get his mast put on his boat...chickie has a new apartment...does it get any better?
actully a lot of people are saying that the third is the best with the second being the slowest. i will have to agree that some parts are pretty slow, but then some parts are pretty tough to put down and stop reading, to keep in line with all the sailing refferences in the book the tempo of action in the books seem to ebb and flow...

The second book was getting a more like a "Jason Bourne" story than something a real life person could be expected to be able of accomplishing. Not that the first wasn't a bit more like a Tom Clancy novel than an arfcom SHTF read like something by Sherry(Deep Winter, Shatter, Remnant), Crawford(Lights Out), Forstchen(One second after). I like ation and adventure as much as the next guy but my ability to dissociate reality tends to be lacking sometimes and i like my characters to be regular guys caught in an entertaining(if often shitty set of circumstances) and not be more like international spies. I enjoyed Lord of the Rings and others movies/ books where there is an obvious dissociation from reality(IE it's a fantasy story). I just happen to prefer characters from "well it could happen" books to be a little more down to earth. I like the families from Shery's and Crawford's works more than James bond and Jason Bourne, it's just more believable is all i'm saying.
That said, I'm just a touch over 200 pages in to the the third book now. so far it is by far the best imho. This one is a lot harder to put down than the second and a lot more engrossing than even the first. I hope there will be a forth as Brackens writing is definatelly improving!

finished the last one a couple days ago...
the third book is by far the best...

Excerpts from Matt Bracken's books
I personally liked the 2nd and 3rd books the best. Reading the excerpts is what convinced me to buy them.
I'm a fan.
Gotta love Jamal......

I've read all three books and to tell you the truth the first one made me "think" the most. I could relate to the possibility that what was written in the book could possibly happen. As far as the second and third book goes I was able to skip over sections of dry material and still not lose the drift of the story. I didn't care for the ending of the third book as it was far fetched in my opinion and lacked that edge of your chair excitement. But when foreign interests and U.N. forces entered the U.S.A. as peace keepers I felt this was plausible also. On a scale from 1 to 10 I'd give the books a 4. Only because the series was well written but dry in many places.
Just my humble opinion.

P.S. I just gave the books away in a Pay It Forward thread.
Excellent series, liked all three. I am re-reading #1 right now.
Also read One Second After and Lights Out recently.
Bracken has a fourth book coming out in '11
Rebel Yell sample chapter ,looks promising.
I bought all three and agree that the first one was, by far, the best. By best I mean it was the most thought provoking, the story line was better and it seemed to be better edited. The last two were not bad but the first is what sold the last two.
i read almost 50% of the 1st one online, then had to order the book to read the rest. i did notice the online free part, left some stuff out. i just got book one yesterday, started almost where i left off, and killed the other half in a afternoon........ im thinking of rereading the first book completly, to make sure i didnt miss anything.
i read the first chapter online of the second book, the quit reading and ordered it a few minutes ago. i really liked the first book, looking foreward to the next two. the only book i have ever bought and hated was " atlas shrugged". i love these types of books, but i just could NOT read atlas for shit, i finally just gave up after 100 pages.
