And just because it will come up again. Germans tend to stick two, three or more words together into one when writing it out and speaking. One of the most common examples would be Volkswagen. Volks (people) and wagen (car) mashed together into one word. It gets slightly crazy when trying to use translation programs on the internet. So...

Bundeswehr is actually two words Bundes (Federal) and Wehr (Defense) spoken as one. Freibundeswehr would be Free (frei) Federal (bundes) Defense (wehr), meaning the Free German Army for the intent of the story.

I'll try not to get too complicated into the foreign languages in the story.

I'm going to make a guess that you're stationed at Spang?

I was at Bitburg from '86 - '88, about weekly we would head over to Spang (We called it Spang-Quentin back then) to the AFEES Toy Store for baby supplies. We went to a couple of "Pig Fests" in Wittlich.

Your story is bringing back some old memories <G>.

We have some other choice words for Spang now, but some of the younger readers might give their parents a heart attack if they ever repeated them. And yes, that's where I am stationed. And no toy store over here now, it's on the Bitburg Annex...yes, Bitburg is now a satellite of Spangdahlem. The housing, BX, AFN, schools and Commissary are about the only things left up there. Crazy world.

Pig fests are just a fine reason to eat mongo amounts of pork, drink mongo amounts of beer, all in celebration of some pig who ate a carrot.

For those lost, just Google "Pig Fest Wittlich Germany" and you get the story.

And I was informed my ability to create new German words sucks. I can create German words that are not gramatically correct.

It is apparently Freie Bundeswehr, same meaning as I intended, but apparently the three words cannot be connected. A minor German rule of some sort.

Story corrected.

I am so happy to read this. But frustrated that I can't pick out a single specific reference.
The language at the beggining of the concealed team having the jump on the approaching patrol was a scenario playe out multiple times in normal.
The language and SOPs of the recon is so familiar now, you have a very recognizable voice.
The themes of the German wanting to have a safe place for his daughter to grow up and follow her dreams sounded like the motives of the group at the Dayfield ranch.
I think it is high praise to say the entire chapter felt like it was part of normal.

OK, not I'll let some people more observant than me or with better memrories tell me what it was

Thanks for a great chapter Grand!

Finally got the reference!
Erik Weber of the German Speicher resistance is the father of Elke Weber.
He says of his daughter Elke:
I want my daughter to grow up proud and live in a place where she is free from fear. I want my Elke to be able to reach the stars like she wants to do,” said Erik.

Elke Weber is also mentioned in the epilog of the story 'Normal'

Time since attacks: 37 Years, 1 Month, 24 Days
. . . the expedition of ten people will descend to the surface (of Mars) and, for the first time in human history, mankind will set foot on another planet. UN Space Officials in Houston are still close lipped about who will be the first person to set foot on the planet. The current runners in the rumor mill coming out of Houston are Jackson Ford from the AFNAS, Elke Weber from Germany or Dmitri Koronov from Russia.

You have really knit a tight mesh here Grand!
The date/timeline reference format between the stories make it a little tricky to fit the puzzle pieces together.
Looks like she made her father proud
