Hunting on Military Bases
I am Army ROTC and I have a personal friend who is a MSG (RET) who wants to take me elk hunting on Ft. Carson CO.
Are military bases usually less crowded than public land?
Anyone have experience hunting on base?
thanks
Different bases/states work it differently, but yes, it's a pretty good deal.
Sometimes the seasons and weapons (BP, archery, etc.) are slightly different than regular state regs.
I haven't done so in many years (pre-911; been busy since then

), but where I did, you had to be .mil to hunt of the base so there were few other hunters and they were other servicemembers.
As mentioned each base is different. Some go by state regs and others set their own seasons since its Federal property. I've also been too busy to hunt on military bases since 99'.

well i got a tag, over the counter bull elk.
Apparently there is an afternoon class i have to take, no problem though.
Good luck and good hunting. Report back how the hunt went. I'm interested as my son is stationed at Carson (course he'll miss the season again do to deployments).

In TX we hunted on Laughlin AFB while my dad was stationed there. Qual, cotton tail rabbits and all kinds of ducks/teal. Good hunting. Had to go to the MP's and sign out an area and stay in that area for your hunt.
In VA I've hunted (deer and rabbit) on Ft. Pickett and I know guys who hunt on Ft. A.P. Hill. Civilians are allowed to hunt on both these Army posts. Again, you have to go to the MP station and sign out an area to hunt in and stay in that area.
Ft Carson has alot of nice animals walking around. Seen many nice elk and deer down by the red devil training site.
There are several problems with drawing a tag for Ft Carson:
1. The post commander can shut down all hunting on post at any time for military necessity (not uncommon). There have been numerous occasions when the hunt was restricted to weekends only.
2. Certain areas can be closed totally at random. If you've scouted a nice spot and found game there, that area may be closed when you show up to the DOW check-in station that morning. Total luck of the draw.
3. If you show up late, and there are lots of other hunters in front of you, you may be assigned to one of the less desirable areas. First come - first serve at the DOW check-in station on post.
4. When the elk get pressured on post, they jump the fence, cross Hwy 115 and head to private land.
I have lived in Colo Spgs for eleven years now and there has always been an abundance of game on Ft Carson. The trick is to be able to hunt in a unit you are familiar with that is actually holding game that day!
TennVol,
Thats true with any military post such as Ft Campbell and Ft Bragg.

Yep, there is. Also, don't forget to go to Outdoor Rec ITR section to buy your post tag ($15 IIRC). Lately one of the units has been getting all the training areas. A bud of mine had to bow hunt off post on opening day due to this. Hopefully, that will not be an issue dome the end of October.
