Put a little dirt in the bottom then the potato, cover it with a few inches of dirt and let her rip.

1-2" OVER THE SPUD.. Then keep adding as the plant grows. (hilling)
I've never done buckets. But I also plant in the bottom of a trench with only a little bit of soil over them then start filling in.
These will need it the first time soon.

We plant in the ground, but the principals should be the same. We dig a trench about 8" deep and plant them about 1-2 inches below the bottom of the trench. Then as they grow, we backfill, always keeping the top of the leaves above ground.
That's roughly what we always did at home. Only we probably cover them with a little more dirt, maybe 4". Then at some point we would hoe the dirt up on them.

I had to check what state you were in when I saw that field. Thought you might be a friend of the family

The dogs like to lay in the cool, freshly turned up dirt on a hot day.
