Compost score! Mushroom soil and garden pics added 4/5

Last year my garden was rather anaemic and the clay soil was largely to blame. We knew it wasn't great but didn't have time last year to get it in shape. This year I am going to be adding mushroom compost. Mushroom compost, for those of you who don't live in mushroom growing areas, is the dirt they grow mushroom in. It is made from things like straw, cocoa husks, ground corn cobs, chicken poop, and various other goodies. It can only be used once for mushrooms and is then steam sterilized and sold. It is wonderful stuff to add to your garden.

I called one of the local mushroom houses today and I'm getting 20 yards of compost delivered for $150. I was expecting to pay more than twice that. Tomatoes the size of watermelons this year.

UPDATE 4/5/2012

Got my mushroom soil delivered. They gave me a full load about 30-35 cubic yards I'm guessing. Still charged me the $150. SO about $5 per cubic yard. Here is a pic of the pile and a close up. Also a pic of a couple rows of the garden after tilling in about a 4-6" layer of the compost.

I don't think you'll get quite the bang out of mushroom soil that you're thinking you will, but it sure won't hurt your clay soil!

I used it back in 2007 at another house I had here in PA. It does do wonders for breaking up the clay. It depends on the composition of the compost, but some of it is very rich in nitrogen. Maybe the tomatoes will not be huge but I bet my weeds will be awesome.

I scored this past weekend too.

5 Deuce loads of old horse manure. Most of it had been in the pile over 5 years. It was like soil.

I turned about half of it under today, and ran the disk over it a few times.

FREE.

I just make my own compost :)

If you do this..... Don't forget to add fresh cut grass to the pile and water it down.

I make my own as well, but 20 cubic yards is a lot of babnana peels.

Great score! 20 yards for $150 sounds like a great deal to me.

I predict your plants will like that. Mushroom compost usually isn't as rich as other forms of compost, but it should help with your clay problem.

I also have a pile of chicken poop that has been building up all winter.
