Mylar question

Hi All,
I will be ordering mylar bags from Sorbent today and had a couple of questions.
I will be mostly storing dry goods such as beans and rice. Are the 2.5mil bags sufficient or do I need the 3.5mil bags?
Also, I am planning on buying the snorkel vac they have and wanted to know if I can use it with mylar bags as well as vacuum bags.

When it comes to the mylar bags, I believe thicker is better.
I don't know what size bags you are buying (1gal, 5gal, etc), but I doubt there is a significant cost difference between 2.5mil & 3.5mil.
I use the 7mil 1-gal Mylar bags from the LDS.
I do not use a vac-sealer for my bags. I simply insert an O2 absorber, squeeze out the air and seal the bag with a clothes iron.
They suck down nice and tight.
A google search on the snorkel-vac shows several people also use them with Mylar bags.
Looks like a nice sealer especially if you are going to use it for things other than Mylar bags.
I would still include an O2 absorber in the bag before sealing it.
This is my opinion only and it's worth exactly what you paid for it.

I have the Snorkel vac and the thinner [3.5mil] bags . Not having a lot of success with it. I believe those bags too thin. Pay close attention to bag width since the Snorkel vac will only work with bags up to a certain width.I prefer 5mil are thicker. I have come to believe 02 absorbers are the way to go. Lastly many 02 absorbers only last 6months after their manufacturing. Found this out the hard way. Now at least 2 sellers of 02 absorbers state in their advertisement that they are only good for 6 months if not used. Live and learn.
Forgot to also state on another web site in the past , a die hard Snorkel vac guy told me he did not think the vac would work with thicker bags.

Then I guess the LDS truly are blessed.
I get my O2 absorbers from the LDS, usually 2 bags (100 ea.) at a time and use them as I need them.
After opening a bag, I use the ones I need and then reseal the bag with their clip.
I have used them as needed over the course of a year with no problems.
I don't think the absorbers go bad, I think it has more to do with the packaging (allowing air to get in)
Here is a photo of a bag with just a few left which was taken a good 8 months after opening the original bag.
I used them and they still worked fine.
ETA: Easy to tell if they have activated.
When fresh, you can feel the iron filings inside the packets moving, once activated, they feel solid inside.
I tell you, the LDS are serious when it comes to LTS of food.
