Break in fires are all done and we are enjoying our first real fire. Blower on high and the double doors to the rest of the house are wide open. Thanks to those who recommended the Osburn. A couple cords of hickory, cherry, oak and ash stored under the lean to roof. Bring on the below zeroes now.
^ my Osburn 2400. Post up some pics of yours if you get a chance
It's helped a ton so far. We just did the math, and while the weather has been 3% warmer, and assuming similar family electric usage, last year vs this year, and factoring in that we've still not adjusted all the variables (vents/fans etc), we've saved 44% off last years bill vs this year.
It's going to completely pay for itself in 4 years or less.

I like it!!!
The surround wasn't quite tall enough to close the gap but I am having a taller piece made. The buck is going to have his warmest winter ever.
nice moose
is there some kind of blower used? I have a fireplace that I don't get enough efficiency out of and I'd like to start using it more as I have access to plenty of firewood.
This unit has a built in two speed 110v blower. It pulls the cold air from underneath the unit and pushes back over the top of the cook top. No furnace necessary.
I bet one or two doorway corner fans in the top corners of the alcove would really help move heat around the house.
I've seen them in cheaper than dirt or sportsmans guide, but I'm sure ebay/amazon as well as tons of others have them. I'd search "corner fan" or "doorway fan"
10-4 thanks.
