I see alot on these boards about making water safe to drink. What kinds of water are we talking about? Creek water, pond water or a bucket from the Mississippi?
I dont have a clue what I would need to do this or how to do it. What do I need to buy and what are the correct steps to drink and cook without getting sick. Thanks.

with what i own..all of them can be had safe to drink.

but so can boiling and pre filtering on your own.

I run the katadyn's ( hiker, mini, pocket and trk ceradyn drip)
I also stock about 10 gallons of bleach, and pleated filters and several means to boil h20 if the filters fail.
Though, the mini is rated at 2k gallons ,,the trk at 40k gallons plus and teh hiker at 200+.....

Here is a way of doing easy research.

Google REI. Whatever the organization sells is the most current. Of course, you buy elsewhere or on line if you are cheap.

Try to understand the difference between the concept of purifier and filter. Most people don't. The better devices can do both tasks. Eventually, you will consider Sterpin which has both concepts.

If you already have an individual hydration unit, by all means buy an inline filter.

I cannot decide on a bigger home base model for my family. There seems to be so many decent models. I hate to drop a big chunk of change on something I will hopefully never use

in addition to our water preps, I purchased a Katadyn Vario, and we each have a Augason Farms Filter bottle. I currently have 5 gallons of bleach and a case of pool shock(some of which will be used in the pool this summer), and lots of coffee filters.

My main emergency source of water if a river out back that is down a 50 ft cliff. But I figure some buckets and rope and I am good to go.

Just a reminder for those who will be using "bleach." Bleach's potency will decrease overtime, I think you won't be able to keep it for more than a few months. Anyone remember exactly when you should discard bleach?

For me personally, I am not planning on an extended SHtF scenario. I am thinking along the lines of my 2-3 months, and everything will return to more or less normal, ie municipal water etc.

It is way too costly to plan for extended SHtF, because it probably won't occur and as you already observed, may never happen. With that said, for me personally I have 4 55-gal containers filled with water, and 4 water filters, that should be enough to take care of my needs. I am now better prepared than 99% of the sheeple.

I have a Sawyer .1micron filter with the 5gal kit....Adventure Safety Products... I have an on site shallow well, so am not that concerned with virus... Sawyer has a .02micron filter if that is a threat... the Sawyer can be back flushed, and good for 1 million gallons according to the literature...a pack of HTH chlorine and bottle of Clorox and bottle of Betadine is standard hurricane supplies
