Heads up on a good deal on USMC survival kits and more
I found what I think is a pretty good deal ($50) on USMC survival kits here, http://www.unclesamsretailoutlet.com/USMC-Sealed-Survivor-Kit-1680013257861.html
When I looked up what other sellers were asking everyone was selling them for 100.
Here are some reviews of the kit, http://www.donrearic.com/usmcskit.html

They also had a good deal on a surplus tent. http://www.unclesamsretailoutlet.com/Catoma-Stealth-I-Single-Man-Tent.html

Seemed to be charging much less than other sites on the net. Plus they have good prices on a lot of random stuff. Worth bookmarking the site in my opinion.
PS I have no connection to the business, just giving a heads up since we are all on the lookout for good deals.
Good price on the kits, one thing to keep in mind is the age of these kits. Pretty pricey for the contents but great to resell and make a up to date kit.
Is there anything in these things that you can't replicate on your own?

That was just painful to watch.
I am trying to figure out what is worth $50 in these things. I guess to some because it was military issue it must be something special but it appeared to me to be nothing I would pay $50 for. The AMK kits have similar kinds of things in them and they are not 20 years old. Take up a lot less room too. The knife was nice, something not in the AMK kits unless you go for a more expensive one.
But, to each his own.
This is the retail arm of GovLiquidation that runs the surplus auctions for the military. Also watch their shipping - a bit expensive.
And a question for the critics - what does being 20 years old have to do with anything? I don't think there's anything in it that expires, is there?

I don't know that it expires but anything 20 years old like a compass that has been rooting around who knows where for 20 some years may not be in real good shape.
And it is just possible that something better came along in the intervening 20 years. Is it "worth" $50? If it is to you is is. Not to me. OTOH, you can probably get $50 selling the components on eBay to people who just have to have a military survival fishing kit for whatever good any such fishing kit will do you. In fact, the knife alone often goes for $30-50 by itself. It might well be worth buying them just to resell the pieces.

I can't speak to these USMC survival kits, but I know the small Army survival kits from around the same time period had several items that were age sensitive.
Here is that Don Rearic site hotlinked that he mentions in the video:

FWIW I've never seen a single item on the "Unclesam" site that couldn't be bought cheaper somewhere else if you look, and usually don't have to look very hard.
The auction side is a bargain if you're willing to jump thru their hoops etc and roll the dice on getting quality like any auction, but the retail side flat out sucks.

Only reason I have bought from UncleSam was because I was for sure of what I was getting rather than taking a chance from an unknown seller. I would much rather deal with a retail seller because there is recourse if product is not as advertised.

This appears to be the same kit from
Cheaper Than Dirt.
They do not have them anymore, however, it gives you a look inside.
I don't really see anything all that time sensitive.
Not sure I would pay $50.

I would never say never.
I bought a Safariland thigh holster model
6004 in olive for $20. including shipping a while back.
It was used, but in really good condition.
I would be happy to pay $20. for another one.

I've done pretty well there from time to time. In early December last year i got a pair of 400 Gr Danner Acadias for $70.00. I bought a Polartec jacket for $23.00 recently. I got a practically new ( still had the fitting instructions in it) USMC Ilbe large pack with shoulder straps and waist belt for $160.00 last year. You are correct that you can find alot of what they have cheaper but if you watch their site, you do come across bargains. BTW, I did see this med kit on the site and passed.

You must have small feet. I saw that about the Acadias and they only had sizes 5 and 6 in Mens! Still a great deal if you can wear them.

Actually no, 10.5W - This was part of their black friday or cyber monday sale

I have opened over a half dozen of these kits, all of them 19 to 21 years old. None of them had a damaged compass. Three of them had been stored in heat so high that it melted and deformed the votive candle. So, take it for what it's worth.

I think, taking your words at face value, that there really isn't a kit that you would find "valuable."
I get these type kits and tear them down for componets to self made kits. Usually the needles and pins in the fishing kits are rusted where they are inserted into the flannel material.
The old demo knives sell well but I use the proceeds to buy better Swiss Army knives with saws and lock blades.
The compass is good for it's purpose, whistle is good, signal mirror is good, Cable saw is so-so.
Doan fire steel is good to go. Overall I like them but they need a good Aquamire filter and purification tables and some good bank line and 550 cord to finish them off.
Stick some high protein bars or Daytrex bars and your good for a few days. Just my 2cents worth.

Yeah, it always seems to be that way. Even on the old plastic Tra-Con fishing kits. The cotton flannel just holds moisture so even if they pull a seal on it like they do with the aluminum "tins" that form the fishing kit, there is enough moisture in the cotton flannel to at least partially rust the sewing needles. The safety pins are usually chrome covered brass or black coated brass, at least all of them that I have opened, anyway.

I wish Victorinox could make a knife as tough as those old Camillus Demo Knives! My favorite Vic SAK for survival kits is a Hunter model, locking blade and a saw, both a little longer in that model than in most Vics.

In the later kits, the compass was a Brunton Smoke-Chaser model. In the earlier ones you get a dandy treat, a Made in Sweden Silva (Military) Baseplate Compass. The whistle is good but not quite as loud as a FOX-40, the mirror is the same as the commercial Starflash brand and that particular wire saw, a Bestway, is about the best of breed. There really isn't a wire saw that is "better" than that type. People just have to be patient with it and use it in the configuration it was designed to be used in - as a bow saw.

Some people to this day claim that they don't work and to use a "fire steel." Apparently they have never handled a DOAN because it has a ferrocerium rod on the side of it. 8-)

Yeah, a good little day pack, a Kabar or ESEE fixed blade, some MetRx and some Daytrex or Mainstay and a poncho liner and you could do a lot worse.
