What spray paint to use on an altoids tin

so i bought one of these: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Hinge-Top-Metal-Tin-Altoids-Size-Great-Survival-Kit-/110672978501?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item19c49fa245#ht_619wt_698

i realize i could keep it blank, but i was looking at spray painting it an OD color. my line of thinking was, if i am hunting or stalking an animal, the shiny silver of the tin could reflect and scare of an animal. then i was thinking, if i spray paint the tin, and use it to boil water or cook with, will the paint give off toxic fumes, and if so, is there a safe paint to use?

Some survival kits include a mirror to use as a signaling device... could be a reason to keep it shiny?

If you do decide to paint it (and plan to cook with it) I would go with the grill paint or "high heat" rated paint... not sure about the fume though?

WTF

Where do you plan on keeping this on your person, that it could reflect and scare an animal while you are stalking?

Keep it plain, wrap the whole thing in one piece of bicycle inner tube to keep it closed, and quiet.

Sand it for good mechanical adhesion, prime it, and use a compatible OD paint. Brownell's Aluma-Hyde II is nearly indestructible.

I can't believe you are going to spend over $5 for an Altoids can. Especially, if you were going to paint it anyway, why not just go buy... an Altoids can?

If you like/use tins, check these out. I ordered a few a while back. These are nice heavy duty tins. They also have nylon pouches available that fit them . $2.25 each as of this posting.

If you heat it with paint on it, it prolly will give off toxic fumes. When you smell them, just turn your head away and avoid them.

Problem easily solved. People have using this trick for thousands of years.

I have sprayed Altoids tins with flat OD Krylon in the past with no problem.

Don't over think it. It is, after all, a cheap, disposable, chinese, stamped metal box.

If you start putting a lot of prep time and Aluma-Hyde in it, all you will have is a green, cheap, disposable, chinese, stamped metal box.

Put it on the grill, set on medium for about 30 minutes. Turns a nice black color all on its own. Discovered this while "cooking" my char cloth in one.

Anyone ever use a plastic travel soap dish? Some of those are fairly sturdy.

hm.

im thinking of buying a pelican 1010 (i think thats the number, its their smallest one). the only thing you lose with that is cooking/water boiling ability that you have with a tin. then again, spearing a fish or small game and cooking it over a fire, and purify water with tablets from your kit and then its not a big deal.

How much "cooking" or "boiling" could you do with an Altoids tin? maybe 3 or 4 oz of water. I don't think that would factor into my decision making. If you can afford it and justify the cost, go with the Pelican.

I wouldn't use an Altoids tins for any cooking much more than making char cloth, but if you get a bug up your ass, you could try polishing the interior of the lid to a mirror finish, thus negating the need for a dedicated signal mirror. Truth be told I got tired of trying to polish it and just put a mirror in mine instead, but if you feel up to the task it's something you could try.

I've sprayed painted a bunch with Krylon and they have held up very well.

You did say "bought" in your opening page. Leads one to believe you purchased a nickel worth of stuff for an outrageous price. Just sayin'.

I see alot of suggestion but no examples... Krylon in a "multicammish" pattern.

Baked on Alumahyde II or Duracoat, Gunkote, etc., is the answer to your question.

I made a psk out of an altoids tin several years ago, baked alumahyde to it, and held it together with an inner tube section. Keys and coins have not scratched it yet.

Fixing-up these Altoids tins is all well and good, except that they are inherently flimsy, and will be worthless after the first impact on the thing. Not waterproof unless you wrap it with waterproof tape.

I suggest buying altoids, saving the tins, and then using them as semi-disposable containers thereafter. YMMV.

Or Sell the tins on ebay and profit.
