Big Berkey Water Filter ~ How long till I change Filter?
Hello all,
I have a Big Berkey Water Filter with 2 filter elements in the upper portion. I also have 2 PF2 Fluoride filters attached in the lower portion of the berkey can. My question is, How long until I need to change the Black filter elements? What about the PF2 Fluoride filters? I fill up my berkey every 2 weeks or so. I also fill a 1 gallon fridge pitcher while I am at it so all in all every 2 weeks I must filter about 3.5-4 gallons.
Given this usage of about 7-8 filtered gallons per month, how long until I need to change the black filter elements and PF2 filters? Basically I need to know that life of each component. I assumed changing the filters once a year sounded good, but the way I figure it, I am only filtering roughly 100 gallons a year. Maybe a little more, but you get the idea.
Thanks
When it gets so slow that it pisses you off, clean them w/ a scotchbrite pad.
You can clean them a bunch of times before they need changing.
Ditto above.
What about the PF2 filters that filter the flouride and heavy metals? You cant really scrub that with a pad.
THanks
Those I don't know anything about. Sorry.
If you got the the black berkeys, they are good for about 6000 gallons, so you've got a long life left in them.
The PF-2's are good for 1000 gallons or 2 years, whichever comes first.
There's some other good information here:

Run water with food coloring in it. If the coloring leaches the filter is done.
