I don't know what to do. You all provide so damn much knowledge and info I just don't know what to do.
I drive a truck for work. I go from Chitcago to St. Louis most of the time. My problem is do I put together
a GHB or a BoB. I have a few things in a bag nothing compared to what most of you guys have shown on
other threads here. Any help info or insight would be great.

You need a plan

Prepare for the most likely first, and the least likely last.

Hope this helps

If you constantly run the same route, and are worried about getting home, find a storage unit halfway between your farthest point from home and home. Stash things like a bike and other related goodies that would help get you home, that you cannot fit into the truck. Or, you could even rent two small units, and have it in thirds.

Its a long walk. Plan out what it would take to walk home. Do you have any way to bring a bike or folding bike with you? Do you have safe places to rest along the way? Friends? You are driving a truck so keeping food with you is easy.

What kinds of situations do you think could stop you from getting home?

St Louis native here (we live 50 mi out though) remember OP as another stated the most likely is the first to plan for, and being in the overdue category for a large earthquake consider this...you will have to cross a very large body of water should you be on this side of the river at the time of the quake, also keep in mind St Louis is a MAJOR distribution hub for Nat.Gas, the underground storage in the downtown are is huge and full of natural caves used for this...the city will BURN...as for the BOB/GHB...think feets and eats, if you plan on walking back ( and you should given the horrific traffic even under normal conditions) you will need good footwear and half a dozen pairs of socks and plenty of calories along with water. If you figure there are only 4 possible bridges between Chester and Hannibal that you would be near and of those only ONE was reconstructed post '92 and incorporates SOME Earthquake resistance...well you get the idea.

I like the storage unit idea. I'll have to look into that and see where along the route is an ideal place. Thanks TVLL62CAL, I did not know this about St. Louis. I think though my most likey event I'd would worry about is tornadoes. Any recomendations on socks? All I carry in my back are just basic white socks. My boots are just Carharts nothing fancy.

What do you need a GHB for? Answering that question alone will help decide.

Traveling that route, the most likely need would be either tornadoes or blizzards, both of which would probably be a "defend-in-place" scenario. A few MRE's, water, first aid kit, wool blankets and a change of clothes would be your baseline. Expanding it out further, firestarters, fishing tackle, knives (pocket and survival) and possibly a firearm (not sure what your laws are there) would round out what is needed to get home.

Early on, I admit that I was infatuated by the idea of prepping for TEOTWAWKI events. Not to say I don't have scenarios for that too but my focus now is mostly on realistic events that I may encounter here. Funny thing is, prepping for TEOTWAWKI events preps you for likely real-world events and vice versa.

Short of a massive EMP, asteroid, comet, etc., IMO your first plans should be to stay with your vehicle. Even in the worst case scenario like a blizzard, traffic would be moving again in a few days and you wouldn't want to be hoofing it during those condition anyways.

Smartwool, or swing into a Sams club and look at the Omni Wool socks we wear them daily and are a great deal or any other like them, we all have our faves, and GOOD boots that can make the trip

I think everyone here started out in some variation of "What dod I do"

Figure out what to prepare for, and focus on that.

What scares me as a ice storm or blizzard and an extended winter power outage. Heat, light, and warmth.

Started with some stuff, figured that wasn't right, got another heater option, then found the buddy heaters.

You don't have to do it all right know, combine what you know, what you have, and a couple of new focused items, and you are ahead of 99%. Them just add on over time and expand your focus.
