Anyone ready for the world's demise on December 21st?

How is this whole thing going to go down?
There are so many theories on how the world is going to end... What do you guys think?

I think we missed it. I went by Best Buy today and they're selling Justin Beiber singing toothbrushes. I believe that's the 8th seal.

How many did you get?

Sounds like a good barter item.

Whatever happened on 12/12/12? Is 12/21/12 the new Y2K?

I think that by its very definition the end of the world will be a non-survivable event and therefore not a good SF topic.

Aren't we already suppose to be dead by an asteroid strike from a few years ago.

Not sure. I thought the Mayan calendar ends on 12/21/12.

The date changes too much. I cant remember anymore....

Have you not seen the movie 2012? it is OBVIOUSLY survivable.

You can define it in whatever way you believe, I am just stating that there are SO many theories, and some are survivable situations while some are not...

depends on which theories you believe..

The Mayan calendar never ends the Mayans believed in circular time not liner time.
December 21, 2012 is the end of one rotation around the galaxy.
Oh and the world will end in a few billion years when our sun goes dark or explodes.

The Mayans didn't account for leap year as it didn't exist when they were around so technically the world ended about 8 months ago. I work in Flint Michigan so it pretty much looks the same before or after the apocalypse, asteroid strike, nuclear explosion or other catastrophic event. Kind of like those pictures of Afghanistan after the bombing and no one could tell which we're the before and which were the after pics.

Im glad somebody beat me to this. I thought it was hilarious the first time I read it (about a month ago).

The world will end in something like 3-5 billion years, when the Andromeda and Milky Way galaxies begin to collide.

Im sure mankind will be gone long before then, so no need to worry.

There system was based off days not solar cycles like our modern Gregorian version so they didn't have leap year just a simple 1-2-3 deal. So with there start date and when they believed it was the end of a cycle is Dec 21 2012 is the date . End of the world is back on

I for one will be glad once the day passes so I can stop reading about it

No idea about the Mayans, but I predict some great buys on preps after 12/22

Just in time for Christmas too, so I'll consider that a net win...

My plan is as follows:

December 20, 2012: Throw or attend an End of the World party and drink myself into a stupor.
December 21, 2012: Finish drinking, work off the hangover and get my shit sorted out.
December 22 - 24, 2012: start looking for amazing deals on all the things people bought planning for the Mayan Apocalypse and buy it up ad a good discount ;-)

Use my newfound stockpiles of supplies for more realistic scenarios like ice storms, tornadoes, hurricanes, etc.

The earth will be swallowed up by the sun long before that. Mankind will have to colonize another solar system to survive beyond the inevitable demise of our sun.

ETA: Just looked it up. The sun has enough fuel for another 5 to 7 billion years, so nothing to worry about anytime soon.

For a few months leading up to Y2K, I worked in the mail order warehouse of one of the leading outdoor sporting goods companies. The American Red Cross bought a whole pallet of those flashlight/radio combinations. They returned them shortly after Y2K. Tons of stuff flooded in. Everyone was returning their now-unneeded goods. Will deals abound after the Mayan thing? You'd better believe it. Have some cash ready.

I prefer not to have 'end of the world' kids that know will be popping up about 9 months later (No offense to those who have children), and alot of other methods dont 'agree' with her.

Don't forget the big judgement day that was supposed to happen May 15 2011, then it moved to late October 2011.

Also, the devil was supposed to rise and kill us all on 6/6/06

and we are still waiting on the earthquake that is going to wipe out the whole state of California. That is supposed to happen sometime between 100 years ago to 3000 years from now.

We can only hope that that one happens......

My beef with this whole nonsense is the fact that the Mayan calendar is made up of circles.
It does not end on Dec 21, 2012, their long count ends and starts over again on Dec 22, 2012.
They just don't have to go out and buy a new calendar, they keep using the same one.
They also do not have to add any extra days to keep their calendar accurate.

The Mayans did have some silly notion that history repeats itself.
They had this idea that there were good times to plant crops each year.

They also thought that weather patterns seemed to repeat themselves.

OOooh! OOOoooh! I know how its gonna happen!

North Korea lobs nuke missles at Japan and USA. Iran ignites a nuke in Israel. Or, Israel launches a pre-emptive strike on Iran's nuke facilities, and it escalates. A coalition of Arab nations, and a huge contingent of Soviet troops who have massed on the Georgia border, combine forces and attack Israel. The forces meet in the valley of Har Meggido...

Meanwhile, Greece goes bankrupt and defaults on lots of debt, bringing down the economies of several of its creditors, starting a global recession. The USA's debtors are impacted, too, and lose their apetite for US bonds, and the USA defaults, bringing our own economy crashing down.

We get nuked by some terrorists who obtained old nukes from the USSR, and either trucked them across our southern border, or brought them into a harbor on an old freighter.

How'd I do?
