After dealing with a not so fun case of pneumonia and bronchitis over the Christmas week; I decided that I needed to get back out and do a little fishing. As it turned out my buddy Jeremy was also itchin’ to get out.
We decided to hit one of the local tailwaters for the trip. Sunday morning rolled around and he picked me up and we were on our way. I was glad to be able to get back out as I had not fished since December 21st. We got kind of a late start and we were on the river by 1000.
Once at the river we started getting our shit ready. Jeremy was messing around in his bag and looked up at me and said. Fuck, I forgot my reel at home. He said that with moving he must have taken it out of his bag. I told him that he could use one of mine but that he would have to fish right handed. He said well I guess I have no other option.
Once in the water it took all of a few minutes for me to get my first fish. I thought man this hopefully will be a productive day.
Unfortunately that was the only fish that I was able to manage out of that run. After quite a few whitefish and a sucker; Jeremy suggested that we move on. I said yea that sounds like a good idea.
We decided to fish a run that was a little further up the river. This spot wasn’t ideal for two people but we made do.
When it was my turn I was able to get this nice little guy.
We continued to fish the run and got nothing else. At that point we decided to move on. Unfortunately the next three holes we wanted to fish were taken. We ended up checking out a spot that neither one of us had fished. After fishing the spot for a bit and neither of us doing any good we moved on. Hell even this guy wasn’t getting anything.
At this point it was pretty late, I suggested heading up by the dam and trying to throw some big and ugly streamers to see what might come up. On one cast I had a very solid take. Too bad I missed the hook set; I did not get another take before deciding to call it.
Despite not being the best day on that river, I had a great time. Getting back in the saddle, after what seemed like a long time of no fishing, felt damn good. On the drive out we both came to the conclusion that we need to spend more time on this river.
