Took my boy to the creek today

So I was sitting at home while my wife took our daughter to school. A short time after she left our boys came down stairs and wanted breakfast. During breakfast my four year old asks me “Dad, can you take me fishing?” I tell him sure we can go a little later today if you want.

We left our house after lunch and headed to a little creek that is pretty close by. As we turned off onto the dirt road I could tell he was starting to get excited. We parked, got out and grabbed the gear and headed towards the trail.

The hike in was fun; it was neat to see my boy so curious about things. We stopped for a bit when he saw a large butterfly fly by. He was also really excited when we saw some deer on the trail. This place is a perfect place to take younger people for a little hike and fish. The hike in isn’t bad and the fish are quite stupid.

A short time later we were at our spot. I set my pack down and got my heavy gun ready to start fishing.

Jake was now very excited as I opened up my fly box. He was saying “Daddy put that one on” so I removed the caddis from my box and tied it on. We walked to the water, stripped off some line and sent the fly to where I saw some splashy rises. As soon as the fly landed on the water this little redband hammered it and I set the hook. I had my son hold the rod while I helped him strip in the fish. He was excited when he saw the fish and we took a pic. After we released the fish he gave me a high five and said “Good job dad”.

After the first fish was landed you could see the interest he had. He was telling me where I should put the fly to get more fish. Every fish that we landed he told them “see you later” when they would swim off. He also would give me the “good job” and high five.

We ended up fishing for a few more hours before the rain started to pick back up. I could also tell that Jake was getting to that point where he had “had enough”. So we decided to pick up some trash somebody had left, pack up our stuff and head out. The whole hike out he was going on about the fish we caught and all the things we had observed. It made me happy to see him so interested the whole experience of the day.

I could tell he was a bit wiped out on the drive back home. He was a lot quieter and eventually fell asleep. With all the fishing that I am able to do in a year; taking my kids out is by far my favorite type of fishing.

growing up In hawaii I have caught many beautiful salt water fish, those you caught are absolutely gorgeous looking. What species are they? I may give freshwater fishing a try here in Fl. someday...

That sounds like the ideal father/son outing.

Awesome.

What a great adventure for Jake! Thanks for posting this.

My grandfather and grandmother taught me and my brothers how to fish at a young age and we would do it all the time together. Mostly the great lakes for northern pike or walleye. It was (and still is) quite a bonding experience even if you aren't successful on the fish. My younger brother has a son, also by the name of Jake, that is 7 now but he has been steeped in the family fishing tradition and he loves to come to my place and fish my pond (he has pretty much exclusive rights). He hasn't learned how to fly fish yet, but he can tie his own lines, bait his hooks and take his catch off. My bass are kinda dumb too and it makes it pretty easy for him to have a successful and fun fishing day every time.

What I wouldn't give to have that kind of scenery your Jake has in my back yard! It's beautiful! And you are teaching your son so very well. He won't forget that day.

They are a subspecies of rainbow trout commonly called a redband trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss gairdneri).
