One of the rare events when you have twins and guide for a living is actually getting to fish.
Today, after a quick elk hunt in the am, I loaded up the drift boat and hit the river. I put in @ 10:30 and there were 5 boats in front of me. I was fishing alone so it was a bucket to bucket trip. I didn't touch a fish on the first beat and was pretty bummed as I started the second beat. I knew I was following a couple boats as I caught glimpses of them every once in a while. Every time they saw me they were dropping down to the next hole. Sloppy seconds the whole way, great!
I decided to start fishing to fish that hold in tight spots when the pressure is on. Bingo! I anchored in some fast water and got some dfifts by a downed tree. Got a cast in that I figured was good for a couple lost flys and WHAM! I struck a steelhead that went ballistic. After at least 30 jumps he was way down stream into my backing. I pulled the anchor and hung on as we drifted wildly through the fast water. The fish jumped again and threw the hook. Funny how one fish can make your day. Well that was just the start.
The boat in front of me saw me comming so they left the next hole. I pulled in and anchored up. Rerigged extra heavy for the next 1/2 mile of river. 3rd cast I hooked a nice wild hen. Once again I was SOL, anchored in fast water with noone to row. I pulled the anchor and got close enough to some rocks to get stopped and bail out. The fish was 25 yds into my backing and about to go over some rapids that would be the end of it. I poured the coals on and was able to keep it above the rapids and work it into some softer water. I landed the 24" wild hen by shear luck.
I dropped into the rapid the hen almost went through and stopped the boat on a soft edge. The bucket below the rapid is about 60' long and there is a ledge that slows the water down just enough for a big fish to hang in. I got the right drift and nailed a big fish. Now I was really screwed because there was no way for me to get beyond the next rapid and ledge the big fish hit. I waded back to the bank and was almost below the fish when it jumped and threw the hook. That fish made the hen I landed in the previous bucket look small! I am loving life at this point.
After a couple of miles of nothing I hooked another nice fish way down at the bottom of a tail out. This fish stayed above me for the most part because I didn't drop the anchor until I was almost int he trees. I netted this fish from the boat, snapped a picture and sent him on his way.
I finished the day by messing up on a fish by not getting tight on it fast enough. So on my first semi full day of fishing this season I was able to hook 5 and land two wild fish. A great day to say the least. It is nice to be hooking fish after last seasons very poor returns. The numbers are good this season and I am looking forward to the next four weeks of fishing!
Here he is a wild 21" buck.

Nice!!!!!!
At first when I saw the pic I thought it was a dink........ Then I noticed the numbers in your net

I am trying to remember if I netted him with the mm net or the inch net!

Yes, that net totals 40" when you add it up.
Yea I am so used to looking at my 24" measure net I usually don't pay attention to the numbers. When I saw your fish I was tricked at first
