What size equipement would you suggest to fish for panfish and small bass (usually only about 8-10 inches long) in a creek? Money is a factor as I am retired and disabled. I know wally world has a "package" but I suspect that is not very good to try. Water is spring fed crystal clear and about 2-3 ft deep in most places with a hole maybe 4-5ft. Any tips on what kind of fly? WJ

I would recommend a 4 or 5 weight fly rod for pan fish/ small bass. I'm not sure if you have a bass pro shop by you or not but if so I would check out their fly shop.

I started out with temple fork fly rods, they are $100 but cast the same as more expensive rods. I can't say enough good things about the company, great customer service, life time no fault warranty, just can't beat it really.

if you want to save some money pick up an okuma reel, should be able to get one for around $35-50 but they are decent reels, if you don't mind spending more get an orvis reel, but honestly some of the okumas are just as good.

for bass I use floating line for a creek/river and just use streamers. olive wolly buggers have always worked for me.

hope this helps!

Bass Pro is close, only about 125 miles. I will go check them out. Thanks WJ

if you have any local fly shops around you I'd check them out first, chances are that they sell temple fork rods there

+1 on the Temple Fork rods, in a 5 weight. For that kind of fishing the type of reel isn't very important, as it really only holds the line. You'll play the fish just using the line in your left hand. If you're going to be going after bigger fish, then a good reel with a good drag becomes helpful.

As for flies, definitely get some wooly buggers, but get some small poppers, too. Those are so fun to catch bass and sunnies on it should almost be illegal. Ifyou have any crayfish in the creek, sometimes the bass go crazy for them.

For water like that, I'd use probably a 7 foot leader, with a good taper, down to 8 pound test or so.

Get extra flies, because you'll lose a few in the brush.

I just found this on sale and wondered if they were any good. 50.00 on sale is something I manage for now. I don't even know if I will like it so getting by cheap as possible is good for me. I was thinking of the 5 weight 9 ft. Comes with everything except the flies. Thanks WJ

sorry, I can't get your link to work.

I say go for it anyway, and give it a try. You might outgrow the setup or might have a blast with it as is.
