Thinking about buying a boat. Please talk me out of it.

I've been thinking about getting a boat. Something small 17' - 19', for running around in the bay with the family and fishing.

I might consider going out into the gulf if it's extremely calm, but don't like the idea of being offshore in a small single engine boat.

I know a lot more about sail boats than power boats. Do any of you have opinions on any of these boats?

Cape Horn 17

Key West 1720

Hydra Sport Contender 17

I've always liked Cape Horns and Hydra Sports, but don't know much about Key Wests, although I've seen quite a few around.

Thoughts?

Do not buy a boat.

Go to your local / subdivision storage lot. Drive around and see all the decaying, rotting boats that used to be shiny and new. Repeat as necessary

If you run out of gas, you can't get out and walk.

Around these parts it depends on 'where' you run out - I've dove it several times.

boats are the worst money sinks you can buy.

unless you live on the water and/or plan to use it all the time, would'nt it be more cost effective to rent a boat instead?

i hear these guys advertise on the radio all the time. http://freedomboatclub.com/how_it_works

I foresee massive gun loss in your future due to tragic accident.

I voted Key West b/c I have one that I use for Saltwater and it's a great little boat (17 footer)...

I have two boats....one for bass fishing, one for saltwater, though the saltwater may get traded for a runabout now that the boy is getting older...

I will say this, if you're looking at these type boats, I'd STRONGLY suggest looking at the 4 stroke engines, I have a 4 stroke Evinrude on the Key West, and it's great (of course I have the Optimax on the Bass Cat, but once it's out of warranty, It gets traded)!!

Good Luck!!!

I've been looking at this Aquasport too. I think it might be the front runner so far.

The Aquasport looks nice too, and the 115 Johnsons are good motors, but I would have that motor checked by an independent mechanic (and make SURE he does a Compression check) before I signed the paperwork....the 96 Johnsons were pretty reliable, I had a Fast Strike on a bass boat at that time...

If they balk at all about letting you take it to an independent mechanic...move on and keep looking!

Everyone knows the 2 happiest days of a boat owner, right?

The day you buy it, and the day you sell it.

My boss once said if it flies, f#$ks, or floats, rent it. She was a great boss.

Made an offer on a 1995 Cape Horn 17, not the one I linked to. The offer was contingent on having the motor checked out by a mechanic. It ran beautifully and was in very nice shape for a 14 year old boat.

I just bought a 16' Sea Nymph with a 9.9, but I live 10 miles from one of the best Muskie Lakes in the State and 3 miles from the best Saugeye Lake in the State so I will some use out of it since I am retired.
I took it out last Monday on its "Shake Down" Cruise, took the Wife, I didn't want to fish as I just wanted to run it to work any bugs out but she wanted to fish.
I was checking the trolling motor out and she caught an 8" White Bass, then she caught another White Bass a little bigger, I grabbed my Pole and first cast caught a 3" fish on a 2 & 3/4" Shad Rap I don't know what in the hell that fish was thinking to eat a bait just as long as it was?
Then she yelled she had a nice one, pulled in a 16" White Bass that made "Fish Ohio" and was pissed off when I told her to put it back in the lake
Hopefully I get to go after Muskie since it seems to be warming up, but the damn rain sucks !
