I was given a 6 foot cast net for my birthday, and was hoping for some tips and advice from ya'll on how best to throw it.

I was also wondering if you guys had any tips for catching shrimp with a cast net?

Seen nets are best for shrimp. Unless there really big they will swim right out of a cast net. I learned to throw both my 6 and 12 foot net in my back yard through trial and error.
Im sure theres a tutorial on line you can find.

Bunch of vids over on youtube.

I refuse to do the method where they put the lead weight line in your mouth.

I use the quarter circle method.

The lead dont taste so bad once you get the fish smell on it.

only way i have ever been able to do it is the biting the bottom of the net method, but as someone said on youtube there's plenty of other methods that appear to work. the holes would have to be pretty small for shrimp

been casting since i was 5ish, first net was a 3 foot, graduated to a 6 foot at 12...i was a little short for it so i learned to double it over in my right hand(strong hand) and make it shorter to cast, but still get full spread. i still use this if casting while wading in thigh deep water...

pull rope through it's own loop, secure to casting wrist.
hold end of rope(bit near your wrist) in your hand
measure out a spread arms length(holding your arms out to your side)
loop length to your casting hand(you'll learn how much to measure out with each loop with what's comfortable to you)
do this until you reach the end of the lead rope
when you reach the end, reach down and grab the head of the net(that's the bit that is the center when the net is spread out)
hold that in your throwing hand(with that ring resting on your thumb and index finger)
hold the net up off the ground and make sure no tangles
reach down and grab a lead weight on the left side
put lead weight in right hand, holding mostly with thumb
follow the edge of the net back down to the ground and pick up the end in left hand
plant your feet at 45 to where you're wanting to hit
twist to your right and then sling it with your right hand as you twist back left
your left hand is just a helper to get that net to open, it's a pivet point basically
let go when you feel it's at the right angle to hit your target

practice it again
