Live From M4Madness' Treestand...
...well, not live, but a few hours old.
This evening, I saw a small 10-pointer and a 6-pointer spar around a little –– pushing and shoving, and tickling antlers. As they came by my stand later, I filmed them with a cheap digital camera. The raw footage is much better than the Youtube version, but alas, it's the best I can do for you guys. I need to invest in a video camera with a good optical zoom. The 10-pointer passed at 18 yards, and as you will see, the 6-pointer passed at 0 yards. Yes, you read that right –– 0 yards.

I hope that six is having pleasant dreams tonight b/c he'll never know how easily he could have had an early evening.
Bless his heart, he wanted to think something wasn't right, but he just couldn't put the pieces together could he.
The 10, well, around here I'd be showing still photos not video
You're having an awesome week M4!
The video looks nice and crisp to me.
Your scent control efforts are working, care to share your system?

Yep, I'd shoot him no question. Just depends what you are seeing in your area.

To be quite honest, I was slacking big time on my scent control yesterday evening.

I drove straight to the woods from work, and had dust all over my clothes. I also had on some smelly Axe deoderant that my wife had bought me. I just pulled my warm weather Scent-Lok suit out of the bag and put it on over my dirty work clothes. That suit is quite a few years old, and couldn't have enough carbon left to do crap –– if it even did when new (if you've read of the class-action lawsuit.) I slipped on a pair of Muck boots that still have a rubbery smell, and forgot to spray off with Scent-A-Way spray before heading to my tree. I attached my treestand to the tree with bare hands, then climbed into it.
That said, I usually am very strict about scent control. I shower in scent-free soap, wear unscented deoderant, wash the clothes I wear under my Scent-Lok in scent-free laundry soap, and spray my boots down liberally before going afield. The only positive thing I did yesterday afternoon was keeping my hunting clothes and boots sealed in bags.
Nice vids.
You held the camera a lot steadier that I would have.

I hunted a different farm this morning, and shot this video of a 4-pointer a little after 8:00 AM (around 45 minutes after legal shooting light). The video makes it look way dimmer out than it really was. I must be a small buck magnet –– I can be on a few hundred acre property, and these guys will walk right to my tree.

I set up on the downwind side of where I expected to see deer, walked in from downwind, and he came in downwind of me anyway.
Sorry for the crappy quality.

Note to self: toss the Scent Killer, buy Axe deodorant.

I'm seriously considering purchasing a good MP4 camcorder instead of using my cheap 12MP camera on the video setting. I already have a swingarm that mounts to my stand that I could use with it, and may even be able to pull off some kill shots. Right now, I can only film things that I don't plan on killing, as it's hard to draw a bow and hold the camera too.
EDIT: I just ordered a Sanyo VPC-FH1A full HD video camera online, and hopefully it'll be here by next weekend.

I must be a small buck magnet
Sounds like my bow season last year, except I had wonderful shooting opertunities on some nice yearlings as well.
I watched some video a guy at a recent USPSA match took using one of
These with the head strap mount.
That thing is the bomb.com for $99 + $15 for the strap.
I'm getting ready to order one for my hunting adventures, even though they now have an HD version out. His video was awesome.
I was just talking tonight about how I need to rig this new camera up to a helmet or something similar. I just wish that the thing would hurry up and get here.
Wow. I wish I saw deer like.
How about setting up a trial cam where you think deer will show?
I did this twice this year and got pics of a doe and her fawn. Neither gave me a shot opportunity because they were either allways facing me or stuff was in the way of their vitals.
I'm gonna play with the video settings for the next hunts.
I did. i have high hopes for Monday. I got some pics despite my camera is on the fritz

Yeah I hear ya, I think it's the way to go, especially for bow hunting. The versatility of this mounting system is great. If I want to wear it riding 4 wheelers or whatever I can helmet mount, or to hunt and for matches just slip the head strap right over my hat or tripod mount it in a blind for turkey.
I have one of the swing arms that mounts to the tree. Murphy states deer will come on and stay on the opposite side I mount it every time.
It got to be too much going on in the tree for my feeble little noodle.

Been thinking of one of these.

I saw in the at Dick's in the counter, couldn't look at it closely, as I couldn't find anyone to open the counter. So I just left.
I was intrigued by how small it was, and the different mounting capabilities.
So I did some research, and found it on Dick's website for cheaper than they had in the store ($104 vs $119) and free shipping online, and $15 rebate.
Just haven't convinced myself to hit the purchase button.
Good luck this year M4

All I saw this morning was a flock of turkeys, and I had a small herd of cows walk under me. They ate every stinking white oak acorn under the tree like Hoover vacuums, took massive dumps under the tree, and walked off.

your hunting peacocks and cattle?

Well, my HD video camera arrived today, and is pretty small when compared to my cell phone:

when or if i ever have time at work ill build a 3rd arm out of Alum. and put nylon bushings in the hing points and mount a swivel and pan arm to it off a tripod, also as small as it is you could even make a mount to put it on your head.

I've got a swing arm for a video camera now, but a head mount would be cool.
Gotta link for that camera?
I'm currently using a couple trail cams to capture images, but would like to see what a seasoned, and more successful, hunter has chosen.
Thanks!

Most places are selling this particular model for around $500, but Amazon.com has it for $280 with free shipping.
I've lugged a VHS-C camcorder around the woods before, and it's a hassle. This thing seems to be a dream to carry in my pocket. I took it hunting tonight, and attached it to the swingarm mounted to my climbing stand, but nothing showed up to film.

Wow.
Very, very cool.
Nice find on the pricing too !!!
Good stuff, can't wait to see some of that kind of thing in HD.
I need to get a camera. That looks likes fun.
I finally got to put the new camera to the test yesterday evening. I've arrowed one doe since purchasing it, but realized all too quickly the difficulty of filming something you plan to shoot, even with a swingarm. I filmed this small 3-pointer (almost a 4) in full HR (1080p), and 5 minutes of footage was just short of 1 GB. I learned two things: one, I really need to stick with the swingarm (I filmed this freehand), and two, I'll probably have to start using manual focus, as the auto focus picked out the closer trees a few times.

Have you looked at these?

They aren't HD, more like DVD quality resolution.
Sweet video M4Madness!
Well, this morning I took a borrowed big buck decoy and my rattling antlers and set up behind a huge white oak overlooking a hay field. It got down to around 30 degrees overnight, and a biting wind made it a little nippy. Sadly, I never saw a buck all morning. I did see four does across the field, and managed to film them briefly after removing the camera from the swingarm.

A short time later, I heard a dreaded sound –– the sound of the neighboring horse farms' manure spreader (they spread the manure every now and then on the farm I was hunting.) What a bunch of horse shit.

Pretty quiet here as well. The wind was up more than I expected any doing alot of switching around as well. that's never good.
This morning I set up on a wooded saddle where I killed a 150" buck with a shotgun back in 2005. Big-Al was kind enough to set up one of his trail cams there recently, and got a daylight pic Friday morning of a nice 10-pointer that had previously only been photographed at night. I set up 20 yards downwind of the camera and trail. Sure enough, a buck came right up the trail crossing the saddle, but it was a funky-looking 4-pointer (3X1).

This evening I went to a different farm, and set up on an hourglass funnel. Right before dark, I had a spike buck cut the field corner.

What's going on at the base of his neck/front of his right shoulder? Is that just winter coat folding up as he walks or is there a gash there from fighting?
Fantastic videos, glad you're liking the new camera.

It appears to just be the fur wrinkling.
Yesterday morning, I had two does and a button buck come in. I arrowed the largest doe, and filmed the remaining two, who just happened to stick around after the shot.

There is a little camera noise for some reason –– perhaps from the cold. Also, at the one-minute mark, you can hear my cell phone on vibrate mode receive a text message.
